What is important in drafting players?

How important is the "potential" category when drafting players?

I used to scout draft classes for my needs, finding players with strong ratings in the categories I need. I drafted a 65 pointguard with 'average' potential. He's 6'6, a good 3pt shooter, and I really want him to get better. I train the hell out of him, but after 3 years, he's at 66. What's the deal?

Has anybody noticed what makes draft picks good players? Any insight on scouting players?

Here is what I've learned...

You can tag and scout multiple players on a single trip. This means less clicking every calendar day.

You can get just about any trade through by tossing in draft picks. This is particularly useful when your dynasty is a playoff team in a weak draft year. It's not likely you'll draft anybody worth having on your team, so it's a good to make moves that will help you win champion

errmm on drafting players...usually i draft them prior to the pontential (usually go for good or excellent) then only it would train faster.

i think it just makes them get better, faster.
eg, marvin williams will be good/excellent because he goes from 75 to 95

for me, theyre 7'2 or above, with excellent potential, and number 1-5 overall

sorry, but no. this only works when your shit (bad record), when the other teams actually want to trade picks. if they dont want picks, they will not trade.
tim duncan + no.1 pick for a nobody in atlanta, it wont be done.
tim duncan for the nobody, without the pick, and it will be done... you figure it out

Naturally, the salary caps have to match.

Here are trades I have made, supporting my hypothesis that just about any trade will work with draft picks put in...

Jamal Miglore, 28yrsOld, 71 + 1st round
for
Dwight Howard, 22YrsOld 85

AK47, 31Yrs Old, 92 + 1st and 2nd Round
for
Lebron, 27yrsold - 99

Trading picks makes a huge difference in affecting whether the AI will accept your trade. I don't belive that the CPU teams ever rule out trading picks - they will trade picks under the right circumstances.

no they wont

if your undefeated, or doing really well, they wont accept picks under any circumstances, or trade picks with you.
