A new patch maybe...?

Eh... No. Just wanted to get your attention. First off I'd like to say that this isn't a topic made to attract negative attention. I just have grounds for complaint and I feel that it's worth my time to express my thoughts.

I've been a long-time dweller, around the time when Live 2003 came out. Now, I don't post here, so I guess I have no real senority. But if you could read through, these words might sink in.

It's great that everyone is making patches. Really great. But I honestly don't think it's an effort people are making for the improvement of the game itself. It seems like people are doing it for their own satisfaction, or maybe to build some kind of reputation as a "Great Patcher." Buying this game for the PC, my first instinct when I got home was to visit this site and see if any patches were already out. Turns out there were tons, but about 80% of them were "useless." And this is the problem.

Making patches are fun, but if you're going to make them make it worth your time. Take cyberfaces, for instance. To some people, EA's cyberfaces may not be great. I personally think they serve their purpose. Their faces are easily distinguishable from the next. Do we really need more "detailed" cyberfaces? The same problem goes for portraits. People are making portraits for players that don't look any different. I can understand making portraits for players who have grown their hair or had a haircut, but otherwise it's pointless. The only patches I find worth going through the trouble to make and get are Shoes, Rosters, and MAYBE jerseys. (The reason why I emphasize the "maybe" is because EA already has all the good throwbacks.)

For the time spent making patches for things that are already made, why not do something unprecendented, something more productive? Why not compile some cyberfaces and portraits for players that aren't in the game but are on a roster? Why not take a look at some throwbacks on a jersey site and make a jersey that isn't already in the game?

Now, some of you are probably fuming about this and are saying... "Why doesn't this d*ck take his own advice? Where are his patches?"

Well, you would be right. I make patches but I'm not a great patcher when it comes to graphics. Usually someone else ends up making something better anyway. As far as getting information and finding out what really needs to be patched in order to make a completely updated game... That I can do.

Anyway, this is just a topic for patchers to consider. My concern in this message is your time and how it's spent. Again, I don't want to attract any negative attention. We don't want this turning into a b*tch session.

I'm not really a big fan of patchers in general mostly because of the whole ego thing, and the "GIVE ME CREDIT OR ILL KILL YOU!!@!@!" attitude, but they are ultra talented on what they do (mostly). When I was playing Live on PC (Live 2000, best Live ever) I used to get alot of enjoyment from downloading patches and putting them in my game. Sure I forgot the patch was there after a while, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't really serve a purpose. I mean even things like changing the advertising boards, and also changing the TV presentation logo's and such so it looks like the game's being broadcast on ESPN.

I think this is the sort of thing that makes the game more enjoyable... there's ALOT of duplicate cyberfaces/jerseys etc going around and to be honest they don't really distinguish from each other too much, but then again when most of the popular players are made 50 times over the day the game's released, there's not as much enjoyment when you're left making Ruben Boutjme Boutjme cyberfaces because it's the only one people have done.

I've got a great deal of respect for patchers and what they do, and sure 80% of them might be useless but there's always going to be 20% that you can use, and considering the fact that we don't have to pay for the patches, and alot of the time they're made by people younger than I (19) it really puts things into perspective. I think if you're seeing something you'd like to see as a patch, try and make it yourself or alternatively request it... I think any patcher worth anything would jump at the chance to make something original that could really provide more enjoyment for the game.

Also, as far as graphical things go for me personally, and I'm guessing others are the same, you have to be motivated to do it. If making the 900th Kobe Bryant update is what motivates you, then so be it. I don't really think people can force themselves to do specific jerseys they might not have an interest in or whatever, and if they did I'd guarantee the product wouldn't be too great.

Anyways usually I wouldn't get involved in this, but it's one of the few intelligent discussions I've come across here for a couple of weeks now so I'll make the most of it while I can I'm not sure if it belongs in this forum section, but since I can't be stuffed moving it it will stay here. I agree with alot of your points in principal, and it's nice to see someone actually trying to gain information in this sea of "Gr8 patch. RELEASE!" posts.

I see where you're coming from, but don’t quite share your opinion.

People that have their favourite players(s) want them to look as good and realistic as possible ingame. Now I see nothing bad about that what so ever, so what difference does it make then that a lot of cyberfaces are made; it only speaks to the wider audience that want to see a specific player look more realistic in game, and give them the choice to choose which one they like best. As for the people that makes patches, I'm rather sure that they'd rather have their favourite player patched by themselves, rather than by someone else, that's why all the duplicates are made. But yea, it does get a little annoying when the 30'th Kobe patch gets released while there was two/three perfect ones out already.

Jerseys in the game does look like that team’s jersey, but it doesn't look realistic. How can you be satisfied at all when every single team in the game has mesh holes yet only a few has them in real life. Same thing goes for almost every single patch... It's all a matter of making the game for fun/enjoyable and realistic.

Personally, I haven't been using patches that much lately unless there is that much of a difference from EA's like new hairstyles and such. 2005 has great faces already IMO and from what I've seen from 06, I won't be downloading that many patches either

I mostly just use the patches for th eparts of the game that aren't given much attention by EA such as the ball and the net and some courts too.

Well, I can't argue with you there. Not only because I agree with you but because your point doesn't conflict with mine. I'm just speaking from a realistic point of view. When we talk about realism we have to think... "Just how REAL can we make this game as patchers?"

I've installed those kind of jersey patches before and I had to strain my eyes in order to notice the detail in the game. And I was running it on a high resolution too. I'll be honest, when I'm focused on playing the game, there are few things that I really notice. Patches that are made for things like the Balls, the Courts, the Mesh, the Ads... Those are prominent objects of the game, and their features are noticeable. But for mesh holes in the jerseys... Know what I mean?

Also, if there's going to be one thing realistic in my game... I want for it all to be realistic. For instance...

If I'm going to have a portrait for a player who didn't originally have one... I'm going to make sure I make one for EVERY player who doesn't have one. It's better than releasing singles, in my opinion.

With that said I do plan on making an effort to make a patch of missing portraits and release it. I'm also going to compile a list of the few missing rookies and gather portraits for them, most of which were already patched in live 05. So keep an eye out.

Well the ones that like attention to detail and wish for the game to look more realistic and accurately reflect real life jerseys. I'm not talking about just the meshholes here, but the entire jerseys in general. Like take a look at this screenshot, and then compare it to this screenshot (Both are from 2005 by the way), and then say whether you think you'd notice the difference while playing.

I sort of agree with you about the portraits. This years was rather crappy, so I see it good in that way to patch them, but I'm not gonna bother downloading individual ones unless I'm playing a dynasty with a team that the player is in. If a better portrait is included with a cyberface, great, but I won't bother downloading individual ones since I don't feel that part of the game really needs any improvement in order to feel more realistic or be a better representation of the real deal to me. But when it comes to patches that will make the game seem better to me, I'll gladly spend lots of time searching and downloading them.

By the way, when I say realistic, I don't mean the gameplay, I mean the atmosphere and look of the game. Sorry if I wasn't clear about that earlier.

And when I say "Mesh." I was referring to the basket's mesh. Like three coloured mesh and what not.
