Gameplay or Gliz and Glamour? What's Your Take?

Postby NBAFAN2005 on Sun Jul 10, 2005 4:27 am

Personally im more about glitz and glamour rather than gameplay. Although gameplay does matter to me. it doesn't matter as much as Glitz or glamour

* We'll consider things like dunk contest, dyansty mode and its features glitz and glamour*

Go play NBA Street. I'd take some piece of shit 2D NBA game with midi songs for arena music and Bill Walton commentating as long as the gameplay was perfect. I could care less about dunk contests and NBA Store's.

i dont consider the dynasty mode glitz or glamour myself. the glitz part i would say are the graphics, announcers, and all star weekend, then you got gameplay with is obviously the actual game, and lastly we got depth, which is the dynasty mode. take away dynasty mode and nba live is nothing more than something to do with your buddies when you have nothing else to do.

Dynasty Mode, glitz and glamour? Hardly. In a sports simulation, a season mode is a must.

I'm for improvements to gameplay and Dynasty Mode over superficial or non-essential elements of the game every time. That said, I do appreciate good presentation and the extras, I wouldn't like to see All-Star Weekend taken out.

I think that Live 2006 is in dire need for some stylistic upgrades. I posted some suggestions in another thread about the lack of player emotion and celebrating, silliness in some of the cut scenes, the lack of team averages for the teams stats, and problems with the instant replay feature. I'd rather them tighten up the little things if they are going to work on the presentation factor, then add in modes like All-Star weekend.

Another thing I preferred over the current system (despite the slowdown it causes for some computers) was the 3D portrait over the photo they use now for the players. I don't know if the majority of players like playing the Dynasty mode 15 - 20 years out, but I do, and the game would surely benefit from 3D portraits, or even some sort of snapshot, at least of the created players, so you aren't constantly sorting through the useless default portrait. More importantly I think they should bring some form of the player-progress meter back - it is REALLY hard 15 years into your dynasty, when few of the players are real NBA players anymore to gauge if a player has pontential and is going to develop. Even if he is developing, it's difficult to tell, unless you are memorizing the overall ratings from one year to the next. Some feel the player progress meter made the game too easy, but I think the ratings have become more dynamic since Live 2003 when it last appeared, so I think it would take a lot of work off the hands someone playing a 20 year dynasty has to deal with haha

I'm all for player emotion and celebrations in cutscenes, but I didn't care for the "courtside comedy" cutscenes of NBA Live 2003.

Everybody says gameplay, but dont underestimate glitz and glamour. Live 99 had probably the best gameplay of the series, but no one plays that anymore (actually it wouldnt suprise me if jae does  ). I say its equal, imo.

Yeah, I'd forgotten about that. I don't really mean cutscenes, I'm not that fond of those, and there were WAY too many IMO in 2004. It was worse in 2004 though, was it not? Which one did they constantly slap the camera man?

I just meant, if you watch after a dunk, or a big shot in 2003, the players do a quick celebration animation - nothing too complicated (though a few go on too long), it's just simple touches like that really make the game (and makes the screenshots look better too). A cut scene here or there is nice too, but I guess I am talking more about creating a more realistic on the court / on the bench environment. The bench players react in Live 2005, the players on the court just stand there. There is a discernable tension and energy that exists in an NBA game, especially at the end of the game that certain versions of Live have been better at recreating then others, but sometimes Live 2005 feels like I'm watching the Spurs blowout the Hawks in a preseason opener, when it's actually Game 7 of the NBA Finals.

No, that was NBA Live 2003. No other game before or since has utilised the "comical" cutscenes.

Yeah, I just played it and the cut-scenes are pretty bad. 2004 has a ton though, although they are generally better then 2003. One thing I noticed that I'd forgotten about - the Live 2003 celebpack field seem to be only utilized when playing the game in Arcade mode. So I thought I'd try playing Live 2005 with the "Action" settings as opposed to the Simulation ones... no dice though  oh well worth a shot!

yeh, 2000 was the best, i really enjoyed playing it, should have kept it instead of selling it. i loved the fact that you could save during the game.

I'll be very well satisfied with a GREAT GAMEPLAY, DEEPER DYNASTY mode, more CUT-SCENES rather than ALL-star stuffs etc..

the cut scenes are a waste of time imo. after i see them 2-3 times i just skip them so basicly all the time they spent on them is wasted to me

true, and it is VERY annoying when you play 29/56/82 games in a season + the playoffs and all you get are the same cutscenes over and over again...

I'm a bit like that too. I watch them the first few times and when I'm hyped up to play (say, when I reach the All-Star Weekend in a Dynasty) but I mostly skip them.

Gameplay, easily. I watch the cutscenes once or twice, then skip them. I've turned off auto-replays and only replay the ones I want to see again.

I think adding all-star weekend was a big step backwards because it left them a year behind in terms of gameplay improvements.

The graphics are fine right now. Port them over to the X-Box 360 as the next major upgrade but focus on improving gameplay and removing the brain-dead, moronic things in the game that require immediate attention.

I'm with Sauru on this one.
