NBA Live 2005 Wishlist Submitted

Postby Andrew on Sun Jan 11, 2004 1:02 pm

A big thanks to everyone who contributed wishes this year! The list has been sent off, and hopefully we'll see some of our suggestions implemented in NBA Live 2005. Please note that several people sent in similar suggestions, so your wish may have been included in different words.

Top Wishes

  • Bring back the ability to save during a game
  • Ability to save replays.
  • Reduce the amount of automatically adjusted shots ie. make it possible for Shaq to take it up strong and dunk most of the time.
  • Make further improvements to Freestyle Control ie. do not have players turn around and run in the opposite direction when performing a crossover.
  • Add more adjusted shots ie. reverse layups, up-and-under moves, etc.
  • Remove the animation of players staggering after being hit in mid-air, or make it less common so it is easier to recover loose balls and rebounds.
  • Make it possible to dribble out of double-teams with good ballhandlers.
  • Improve the rotations/substitution patterns. Perhaps allow them to be edited.
  • Have a delay before gameplay resumes after a timeout or infraction.
  • Add the ability to designate substitutions to be made automatically at the next dead ball.
  • Add the ability for a timeout to be called at the next inbound/as soon as you get the ball.
  • When a player is blocked, it should register as a missed field goal attempt. Also, when an inbounding pass is intercepted, it should register as a steal.
  • Do not have players automatically turn their backs when they are being guarded. This makes it difficult to execute freestyle moves off the dribble.
  • Allow players to perform layups using the shoot button, if they are running towards the basket. Sometimes you may want to execute a layup, but the Dunk/Layup button will force a dunk.
  • Add the ability to assign players a third position (if applicable).
  • Take a player's secondary position into account when making substitutions or re-ordering rosters.
  • Bring back the ability to use the D-Pad for movement in the console versions.
  • Have CPU players utilise Freestyle moves.
  • Improve rebounding - allow players to battle on the boards and tip the ball to each other.
  • Add the ability to set off-the-ball screens, so that you can run your defender through multiple screens.
  • Bring back the ability to fake a pass.
  • Add the ability to configure controls to match the PS2 setup when using a Playstation 2 controller with a universal adapter.
  • Allow the user to make a manual substitution when there is an injury. Also allow the user to select a player to shoot the free throws.
  • Add a Create-a-Play feature, where you can draw up your own plays.
  • Bring back the old Press Camera angle, that was present up until NBA Live 2002.
  • Show players on bench in warmups, injured players in street clothes
  • Bring back the option of 2D portraits for users with slower PCs
  • Show players walking to the scorers table, ready to check in
  • Add the ability to disable cutscenes completely.
  • Add free throw rituals, such as Jason Kidd's kiss.
  • Add more realistic cyberfaces.
  • Customise the User Interface for the PC version. Make it similar to the "classic" style (Live 98-2001).
  • Animate player jerseys so that they move when the player moves.
  • Show sweat on players when playing on high detail settings.
  • Add more unique player introductions
  • Show player introductions for ALL games (unless turned off or skipped). Introduce both teams.
  • Get rid of the arcade sound effects when you dunk.
  • Record a different commentary track for Playoff/All-Star games
  • Add more arena specific sounds.
  • Add better first and last name recognition for created players (perhaps a text-to-speech feature?)
  • Add the ability to designate auto-substitution patterns.
  • Add the ability to save team strategies so that you do not have to adjust them every game
  • Allow the player to set team strategies before the game begins. Perhaps add it as an option on the same pre-game screen that allows you to adjust starting lineups, game settings, select jerseys etc.
  • Add a Layup rating. Players with lower ratings would not be able to perform double-clutch/switch hands/reverse layups.
  • Bring back the Clutch rating
  • Make CPU players attempt more mid-range jumpshots.
  • Make coaches have more of an impact on the game ie. teams with better coaches play better in difficult situations. Could also have an effect on simulated performance.
  • Add Offensive Goaltending
  • Realistic scores playing 12 minute quarters
  • On harder difficulty, have the CPU win due to intelligent plays, not by cheating (unrealitic FG%, you suddenly cannot hit a shot, etc)
  • Add real player salaries and the real NBA salary cap.
  • Improve the stats engine so that players have more realistic stats. Also fix the problem where players average fewer points per game after the first season.
  • Fix a bug with the Player/Rookie of the Month Award, where a player will be listed as averaging 0.0 points per game.
  • Fix the selection method for the Most Improved Player Award.
  • Allow selection of more than one team in Dynasty Mode
  • Improve training camp so that player improvement is more significant.
  • Allow importing of college players for the offseason draft (not just from March Madness 2004).
  • Add complete career stats, including career totals showing the teams player has played for, career highs, etc.
  • Improve the simulation engine so that bench players play realistic minutes and average realistic numbers.
  • Show other stats in NBA news such as winning/losing streaks.
  • Give second round draft picks a chance at being good players, and have more steals in the draft. Guys like Nick Van Exel and Cedric Ceballos were/are both good players who were selected in the second round.
  • Make free agency less random, eg. have team's success/player's role/playing time play more of a part in his decision to re-sign.
  • Add the ability to trade players at the NBA Draft.
  • During the offseason, allow more than 15 players on the roster. Users will then have to cut the roster down to 15 players before opening night.
  • Allow trades that cause a team to have more than 15 players, but force the user or CPU team to waive a player (just like in real life).
  • Do not automatically sign rookies when they are drafted. Allow users to renounce their rights, trade their rights, or wait a year to sign rookies.
  • Improve the Scouting Report to include NBA Comparisons, more strengths and weaknesses, playing style, secondary position, etc.
  • Add 10 day contracts.
  • Allow players to entertain offers, meaning that if a player refuses to sign, he might change his mind.
  • Make contract size independant from contract length.
  • When a highly rated player leaves his team for free agency and no other teams can offer him a large salary, have him re-sign with his current team.
  • Have rookies develop in weight (or even height if they are drafted out of high school). It would be extremely cool to draft a 6'9" 205 pound high school kid and have him be 6'10" 215 the next year.
  • Ability to select the length of a Dynasty up to 25 years, or play an unlimited amount of years.
  • Receive a warning when a player is contemplating retirement.
  • Better jersey number assignment after drafting a player or making a transaction.
  • Bring back the multi-team trade option. However, you should be able to specify players going from CPU teams to CPU teams - each team would have to agree to the trade of course.
  • Bring back the Cancel/Confirm Trade dialog box. It allows the user to see if a trade would be accepted, so they can make a few trade scenarios before eventually deciding to complete a trade.
  • Similarly, bring back the "(Team) feels this would make them too weak at (position)" dialog box. This allowed you to alter the deal so that the CPU would be more willing to accept the deal. Much better than simply "(Team) is not interested in your offer". Though CPU teams shouldn't always be interested in offers.
  • Add a Trading Block feature, so both user controlled and CPU teams could shop players/designate players who are available.
  • Make teams "aware" of a player's value. Make it more difficult to acquire superstar players/key players.
  • Abililty to hire/fire coaches.
  • Make the Offseason less linear. The Trade Players, Re-Sign Free Agents and Sign Free Agents should remain available until you start the next season.
  • Allow players to vote for All-Stars/improve All-Star selection
  • Add more statistics eg Double-Doubles, Triple-Doubles, Assist-to-Turnover ratio, etc.
  • Add the ability to manually retire jerseys.
  • Have players' jersey retired by more than one team/the team he spent most of his career with.
  • Offer coaching positions to retired players.
  • Add the ability to offer an extension to a player before his contract expires.
  • Continue to develop the generated rating system for players. Players with great athleticism also tend to be great dunkers and vice versa. This should be represented in the game.
  • Generate rookie's numbers in a more realistic fashion. No numbers in the 70s and 80s.
  • Let the computer take height into account when calculating blocking stats and making draft selections. A 7'4" center with
  • Excellent potential should ALWAYS be the number one or two pick. Likewise...that player should naturally average more blocks.
  • Generated rookies should be more athletic.
  • Add player/team morale and team chemistry.
  • Remove the possibility of players declining due to training sessions. Their ratings should increase or remain the same.
  • Allow more editing of player accessories. You should be able to give any player (created or pre-existing) any accessory from shoes to headbands.
  • Bring back the ability to change player expressions in Create-A-Player
  • Bring back the ability to change player headshapes in Create-A-Player.
  • Add more hairstyles and facial hair, all available in various colours.
  • Ability to choose DUNKPACKs. Perhaps even the ability to edit/create custom DUNKPACKs.
  • Bring back the Custom Team feature, with the following changes:
    • Ability to designate custom team as a regular NBA team, All-Star team, or special team. Special team would basically be the old format of custom teams, while the other classifications speak for themselves. Of course, since it's a created team, it would be deleted when the rosters are reset, no matter what the classification.
    • Ability to specify uniforms worn - custom made ones (selecting colours, etc), individual NBA team jerseys (so you could create All-Star/All-Rookie/All-Sophomore teams), or perhaps some generic ones.
    • More generic custom team art. Simple "NBA" logos, a basketball going through a hoop, etc. Do not make the team logo automatically show up on the jerseys. This way, you could make a custom East All-Stars team from the 80s that would use the East All-Stars logo, but would have a red or white jersey with the 80s style NBA All-Star logo on it. Basically, just a little more customisation.
  • Bring back the old "Restore Rosters" feature, where all transactions and created players are wiped. Make it possible to reload the default rosters.
  • Ability to edit the default All-Star teams (which would save patchmakers a lot of work) ;). Also have the ability to "Select New All-Stars" when playing an exhibition game with the All-Star teams. These changes, unlike editing the default teams, would only be temporary.
  • Bring back the ability to disable automatic roster re-ordering.
  • Find some way to make it possible to implement changes from a roster update into a season that's already started (hey, it doesn't hurt to ask) ;)
  • Make weight independent of body type
  • Allow editing/create-a-coach.
  • Add a better practice mode, eg. ability to practice free throws, 5 on 5 pickup games, etc.
  • Add more Legends to the Legends Pool and Decade All-Star Teams.
  • Add Dunk Contest, Three Point Shootout, and Rookie/Sophomore Game
  • Add more shoes to the NBA Store
  • Retain ability to choose jerseys, but automatically designate alternate jerseys on Sunday games.
  • Improve CustomArt so there are no crashes or problems when using the CustomArt feature.
  • Add a 1-on-1 and 5-on-5 Street Mode
  • Create highlight reels using saved replays.
  • Add a full team practice mode.
  • Add more statistics such as Season Highs, Career Highs, Team Leaders, etc.
  • Show more fans in the stands when popular teams are playing.
  • Add the ability for East/West All-Stars to wear original team jerseys.

General/Gameplay/Bugs

  • Call Flagrant Fouls, but do not have injuries rely on them.

  • Add more statistics/a halftime report to be displayed at halftime.
  • Add real NBA-style boxscores to the post-game stats.
  • Ability to save replays.
  • Make it possible to have more than one cyberface for one player, so that he can have multiple hairstyles.
  • Add more post-up moves.
  • Add the ability to attempt a tip dunk, tip shot or just jump for a rebound on command, as desired.
  • Add the ability for two players to get hold of the ball, resulting in a jump-ball.
  • Bring back the ability to call for a pick without running a Pick-and-Roll play.
  • Improved defensive matchups. Have the CPU team change its defensive assignments accordingly.
  • Add the ability to assign players a third position (if applicable).
  • Take a player's secondary position into account when making substitutions or re-ordering rosters.
  • Bring back the ability to use the D-Pad for movement in the console versions.

  • Add the ability to set off-the-ball screens, so that you can run your defender through multiple screens.
  • Allow players to hang on the rim if you hold down the Dunk/Layup button.
  • Add a pro-hop effectiveness slider. The pro hop makes it too easy to get to the basket and we have no way to control it.
  • Add Force Feedback support for the PC version.

  • Add better 3D crowds.
  • Add more shooting animations. Make it possible to assign/edit jumpshot style.
  • Add a lengthy celebration cutscene that will be shown when the user wins the championship. If they are at home, include fireworks and balloons as well as the presentation of both the Larry O'Brien and Finals MVP trophy.

Presentation (Audio)

  • Get rid of the arcade sound effects when you dunk.
  • Record a different commentary track for Playoff/All-Star games

  • Allow the player to set team strategies before the game begins. Perhaps add it as an option on the same pre-game screen that allows you to adjust starting lineups, game settings, select jerseys etc.
  • Add a Layup rating. Players with lower ratings would not be able to perform double-clutch/switch hands/reverse layups.
  • Bring back the Clutch rating

  • Receive a warning when a player is contemplating retirement.
  • Better jersey number assignment after drafting a player or making a transaction.
  • Bring back the multi-team trade option. However, you should be able to specify players going from CPU teams to CPU teams - each team would have to agree to the trade of course.

  • Remove the possibility of players declining due to training sessions. Their ratings should increase or remain the same.

Creating & Editing Players/Roster Management/Roster Patching

  • Bring back the ability to change player expressions in Create-A-Player
  • Bring back the ability to change player headshapes in Create-A-Player.
  • Add more hairstyles and facial hair, all available in various colours.

    • Ability to designate custom team as a regular NBA team, All-Star team, or special team. Special team would basically be the old format of custom teams, while the other classifications speak for themselves. Of course, since it's a created team, it would be deleted when the rosters are reset, no matter what the classification.

  • A better generated schedule when selecting more or less than 29 teams in Season/Franchise mode. Have the option of selecting an 82 game season no matter how many teams, as this would be useful for old season roster patches. Also, allow saving of custom season formats, which could be distributed with old season roster patches.
  • Allow the editing of a player's contract length and size in the Edit Player screen.
  • Make weight independent of body type
  • Allow editing/create-a-coach.

Miscellaneous

  • Add a better practice mode, eg. ability to practice free throws, 5 on 5 pickup games, etc.
  • Add more Legends to the Legends Pool and Decade All-Star Teams.
  • Add Dunk Contest, Three Point Shootout, and Rookie/Sophomore Game

  • Add a full team practice mode.
  • Bring back the ability to sort stats by clicking on the column heading.
  • Add more statistics such as Season Highs, Career Highs, Team Leaders, etc.
  • Show more fans in the stands when popular teams are playing.
  • Decade All-Stars wearing their original team jerseys.
  • Add the ability for East/West All-Stars to wear original team jerseys.
  • Bring back Win/Loss records for User Profiles.

Wow, this is the first time I've seen a wishlist... very good thorough job!

Take a player's secondary position into account when making substitutions or re-ordering rosters.

When the computer makes autosubs for me... if for example a player with a secondary position SG is higher up in my roster order than a player with a primary position SG, I think it subs in the secondary position one first. So I don't think this is a problem with this year's version!

Great!! A 'lil tweaks CAN be added...

I really think what you said was perfect... I don't recall anything on "Technicals", but maybe that was just me. To me, there should be a slider on "Player Technical Fouls Frequency." There have been a lot of situations that I have nearly DESTROYED the analog controller and/or keyboard when I see a terrible call. There should be a slider on Technicals. It'd also be pretty great if we could add "Fight Frequency". I mean, emotions get in the ways of how you play the game sometimes, and when you can't control it, it's released through fighting (of course...). I'm glad you mentioned "Flagrant Fouls", but maybe there should be something on suspensions. Back to the technical fouls, we, as the coaches of the team, should be allowed 2 technical fouls, and if we were to use up the techincal fouls, the player would have to let the computer simulate the rest of the game.

Yeah, it's more of a problem when the rosters are automatically re-ordered. Auto subs are definitely improved in Live 2004.

We miss one important point on the wishlist: a slider to tweak the number of threes taken. The CPU takes more threes than Antoine Walker. This is especially evident in 12min./quarter games. The CPU takes 45 or 50 threes, way more than league average. I suggest that when EA tests the game, they should test it on 12 min/quarter and pay particular attention to the number of shots taken per game, and types of shots taken. This is one problem that cannot be solved with the current sliders.

The other thing is the CPU players on my team don't get back on D. Most of the time, the player I control is the last man back. I can't imagine what would happen if I lock to play pf only or something.

I'm actually dissappointed aobut the fact that offensive strategy from the inbound pass wasn't included...it's very important in the end of games....otherwise...nice list!

great wishlist as usual. Cant wait to see if they get live even more well done this year. We only have to wait about 11 months to find out.

P.S And no one better reply to this post 10 or 11 months from now with some smart comment like "wrong, we only gotta wait 2 more weeks". Cause that something i would do. :P

Presentation (Audio)

Get rid of the arcade sound effects when you dunk.

Record a different commentary track for Playoff/All-Star games

Add more arena specific sounds.

Add better first and last name recognition for created players (perhaps a text-to-speech feature?)

Andrew, did you add something about bringing back the ability to add or change the ingame ditties?

it was good to see a highlight clip of the Home team before the game and the cheerleaders at the half time (in video like, in one NBA Live 97 or 98)

to create a player, their are less faces, facial hair, hair, colour than in madden or fifa or Nhl, why? edit NBA player face , because men like kenyon martin or ron artest or corey maggette have no- hair, then cornrows.. or headbands or nothing or mask against injures

sign/release a coach : it will be nice to play with van gundy in new york or chuck daily in detroit with his own defense and offense tactics

more sneakers: nike,jordan,adidas,reebok,dada,puma,converse,and1

3-3, 2-2 1-1 mode

It's too late to add anything to the Wishlist. However, members of the production team do browse the board, so there's a chance late entries will be seen and considered. (Y)

hello? anyone wants to play MJ again?

Postby builder on Sat Jan 17, 2004 9:42 am

NBA Live 2005 should have an ability for gamers to play the season bringing back to 10 to 20 years before.
that means we can choose our (classic) favorite players (or teams) from very beginning, and we can play them longer, and no more stupid computer-generated players!! i hate them.because they have absolutely nothing for us(at least me) to get exited about.(and stupid cyber faces....) they have no history background.

On the audio for created players, it pisses me off that any rookies or anybody not included in the original game are just "number 11". I think with the create a player mode, you should be able to tell the game how to say his name. Marv and the Czar could then record a small audio file for all of the 45 or so different phonetic sounds of the English language and you can pick.
For example...
Let's say you wanted to put Dennis Rodman into the game.
There should be an option to pick small audio files in the right order for the announcers to say "Dennis" and/or "Rodman" correctly.
I don't know, it's just a thought. It might be a little to difficult, but each sound file will only be a second long, so it wouldn't take up too much space...

Why is there never any mention of Online Mode improvements for NBA Live? This feature has never really changed since 1999. And there's always been ONE glaring problem with Online mode:

About 75% of the games have one-sided lag. By One-Sided I mean only ONE person lags (and it's usually a delay type lag where stuff happens seconds after you press the button on the controller), which makes it unfair and totally screws up the fun. This has happened since Live 99 and has never been cleared.

I think since there's never really much complaints by the fans and it's never really brought in the Wishlist, that EA just ignores it and never updates their multiplayer technology.

Other things I'd like to have for Online Mode:

Dedicated Server Ability - much like CS and other FPS games have
Spectator Mode - allow people to view your game
Real Time Chat - Live 00 had this, where you could chat DURING the game
FT Slider or Auto FT ability - With one-sided lag, FTs are a nightmare
Ability to play on same team - This was also in Live 00 and was taken out
Ablitiy for more than 2 people to play - This would TOTALLY change the scape of the game if you could have a 5 on 5 where everyone controlled a player. This would probably require that the Dedicated Server option be put in.
ONLINE Franchise Mode - Let us have all the stuff from Franchise mode, but online where every team is controlled by a real person
Record a Game/Highlight Saving ability - One game has this and it works nicely (See ShadowBane), it records all the computer's movements and then plays them back to you in game, making for about a 5mb file for 30min worth of recording.

Online/Multiplayer gaming is the future. Almost every game coming out now is either Massively Multiplayer or somewhat multiplayer. NBA Live needs to greatly improve their multiplayer features and if everyone would start submitting ideas, maybe it would help.

I know online play is popular and there are a lot of people who do play online, but I think the focus remains on single player modes, such as Dynasty Mode and Player vs CPU games. Wishes for online mode aren't intentionally snubbed.

Revisions to the Wishlist

Postby Andrew on Thu Jan 22, 2004 1:38 pm

Revisions to the Wishlist

Although I've already attempted to create a "Top Wishes" section in this year's Wishlist, I'd like your help selecting the most important wishes and urgent issues to be fixed. This means I might be able to sneak a couple of late entries in, but be sure to read the Wishlist first. If we can let EA know what we want most, our wishes stand a better chance of being granted.

If you'd like to help sort the wishes by important, give the Wishlist another look and then either post in the thread or email me at andrew@nba-live.com.

also a good addition will be crowd chanting like D-FENCE or celebrating when the home team makes a crucial basket of crucial defensive play.

Also an ability to argue a call so that technical fouls are given attention 'coz u argued a call so that you have a bit of a control if u get a T or not.

They should also copy the up and under capability in run and gun...

My 2 cents.

What about improved human AI for all those who play with player lock? It's fun to be the point guard and dish the ball to a team mate who is open if they do something with it. In Live 2004, they just sit there with the ball and pass it around till the shot clock goes off and nobody shoots unless you force them to. If the the human AI was a little more dynamic, player lock would be a lot more fun.

p.s.-And please, for crying out loud, nobody respond and say, "Who wants to play with player lock on? That's dumb." I know some people don't get it, but for those who like it, this is important.

Signature Moves...

Postby J-Smoove on Sun Jan 25, 2004 4:49 am

And who DOESNT want signature moves... aka, KOBE's turnaround fadeaway/crunch-time the ball-moves-around-his-body 3 ball; T-MAC's Jordanesque turnaround foot-kickoff after the shot; Shaq's hold the ball at the block, turnaround (pushes his man off) then dunk/layup, Shaq's FREETHROWS; 'Sheed's unstoppable turnaround jumpshot; KG's post-and-gun fadeaway turnaround; AI's mad crossovers (don't forget the BREAK, literally!!, the ankles);

Don't FORGET CLUTCH ability!! (Kobe's specialty)

And I know that alot of people have the "turnaround jumper" signature, but we know the difference between everyones. And it IS their signature moves...

Please review the wishlist as some things are irrelevant

Currently.. a player gets injured you can change the subbed player. You can nominate any player to take the free throws.

They major issues that I see is that court size is a little too small. Increase the size the correct proportions and we'll see a lot more two pint jump shots as oppose to players who step clearly on the three point line and it is still called a three point attempt.. Scores ARE realistic for most players that play the game correctly as oppose to run and stun. 2004 is the most realistic scoring game I've ever seen. Rare does any go for 50pts as an individual.. the mechanics are as close to real as you can get them. But the shot block slider should be looked at... If you wanna turn shot blocks off you should be allowed... Leaving on zero should not result in any shot blocks in the entire game. Most of the other sliders are very good. The whole frachise system still needs a lot of work.. Need to be able to change your offers in $ terms but currently that isn't possible. You can only chancge years.

i dont know it these are mention coz i dont read all that was posted.

My free agent players will resign with me coz he is loyal to my team (like what reggie miller do)
a free agent want to sign for a championship caliber team for less money (like malone and payton do.
i can offer contract extension during season (i know this was mention before)
players will demand to be traded (like van exel during denver days)
free agent will offer you to sign them (you can agree or decline)
let free agent rookies try out for your teams.
multiple team trades (maybe 4)
unrestricted and restricted free agents
crowd emotion like they will boo kobe in denver standing ovation to gp at seattle, standing ovation for a player playing his last game before retiring (mj in phil or stockton in utah) beat LA chant. (im a lakers fan) goodbye chant in LA (nana na na nana na na he hehey goodbye)
team chemistry (shaq and kobe
player coach relation (spree and pj)
gm player relatio (ainge and walker)
gm coach relation
crowd coach relation (chaney and ny fans)

i have other to add on my or i can say our wishlist til next time

one of the best wishlist try to copy the ownership mode of nfl madden 2004.

Andrew, I noticed one of the wishes said 'Brong back the restore rosters feature'. I dont know about PC, but its already present on consoles.

Also, I'd like to see the CPU be slowed down some. On what should be breakaways, the CPU runs twice as fast as me when I'm holding turbo, which makes it possible to disrupt my dunk.

Also It'd be interesting to have meters that showed how content the player is with the team. Kinda like how the CPU is interested in a certain player while trading. The lower the meter, the less likely he wants to re-sign with the team.

Yes, I am aware of that. However, that wish refers to the old restore rosters option. The last few NBA Lives restore rosters by undoing all roster moves and moving created players to the Free Agents pool. Back in the day (NBA Live 2001 and earlier), the default rosters would be completely restored, with all created players being deleted automatically.

It just saves a little time when creating roster patches.
