I really like NBA live 2005, imho it's the best and most realistic NBA live game we have ever had. BUT there are some things that have to be fixed. Then the game would be perfect for me.
1. What's up with blocking? The block rating is completely useless in gameplay(not in simming). Players who have high jump ratings but low blocking skills will still block an unrealistic amount of shots. Why don't the people of EA make it harder to hit contested shots, not just block them? For example, if Baron Davis contests a 3-point-shot by, lets say Steve Nash, he will unlikely block it because he's quite short and threes are almost never blocked. The shot would still be hard to make because (and everyone who actually plays Basketball should be with me here) a high jumper like Davis in your face makes every shot a challenge and it's way harder to hit the target if you cannot see it directly. If Gevin Garnett jumps up in front of Nash and he is foolish enough to take it anyways, what the hell - let it be a block! It's not that hard. Just calculate the chance for a block shot by block rating AND jump rating and height of the defender and consider jump rating and defensive awareness for irritation.
2. Offensive passing. Why do my players always pass so stupid that the receiver has to stop running? Why the hell isn't the passing rating taken into consideration? Jason Kidd can make these passes over the whole court with his eyes shut. And Ervin Johnson might throw a 5-foot-pass into the audience. That is what the rating system is for, dammit! Now you could say that the game would suffer from too many fast breaks like it did in previous lives. Nope. Because to determine whether a player goes for a wide pass we got offensive awareness and speed. So there would be plenty of opportunities for Nash and Kidd to initiate those marvelous fast break plays. And there would be no more need for unequalities in offense/defense speed because there would be more fastbreaks which could be stopped more easily and thus - interrupted and taken into set play.
3. Franchise mode AI. *sigh* It's what bugs me the most. Why does the CPU trade so few players? In 2009, the Memphis Grizzlies will still have Wright, Gasol, Miller, Posey, Williams in their starting five. EVERY SINGLE YEAR!!! In live 2000, trading AI was great. Sure, there were some strange trades that seemed a little unintelligent. But it's twice as good as no trades! Also, who would have thought that Shaq would ever be traded by the Lakers for some average guys? (Except Odom - he's great) Those things happen. It can't be that difficult to program a smart trading routine. One member of this board mentioned a trding block before. Great idea! Do that, EA! So the CPU teams could put not needed (and randomly some additional players) players on that block. And we have the same problem with resigning free agents: Once a players' contract expires, let him consider his options. If there are no teams with enough salary cap space, let him resign with his team. If there are, let him become a free agent. He could still be resigned by his old team. It would be helpful to add restricted/unrestricted free agency here, too.
4. Bring back clutch rating. Not every player in the NBA can do the Jordan fadeaway, right? But some players just can't be distracted. Double-clutch in your face? Turnaround three? Half-court buzzer-beater? Sure, but just every once in a while. Players with high clutch rating should be able to make these shots more frequently than other players. More frequently, NOT every single time, cause that's just unrealistic. For example: Shawn Bradley would be ariound 5-10. He can't even make a layup in a situation when he could go for an uncontested dunk. Kobe Bryant would be an 80. He makes those important buckets, but mostly he just needs too many shots. Reggie Miller is the perfect 99 in this category. And everyone knows why.
5. Bring back in game save, for pete's sake!!!
6. And finally, give us CPU menues or at least joypad control! Clicking those tiny buttons with my mouse makes me climb up and down the walls. And there is so much space wasted where we just see the background. If they added 1024x768 menues and smaller font sizes, the whole 1st round draft prospects in dynasty mode would fit on one page. All we got now is 4 (or 5?) draftees on one page that is only scrollable by clicking (not mousewheel) down- and sidewards and that is unsortable.
I think thats it...
