2006 Dynasty -- To fantasy draft or not?

Postby robjv1 on Fri Sep 09, 2005 3:26 pm

Kind of a silly topic I know, but I've always been curious what most NBA Live fans do when they begin a new Dynasty -- For me I always do a fantasy draft because I like to shake the league up, and then I tend to change teams every couple of years, giving me a whole new set of "unpredictable" situations to work with.

What will make this years NBA Live fantasy draft interesting are the freestyle superstars -- as with any (bad) luck there will the possibility of certain teams having a higher number of them then other teams -- though this may be true of the Real NBA anyways, and I would figure Freestyle Superstars are probably most often the higher paid players, meaning you could only get so many on a team before you are way over the cap. Plus it sounds like you can develop your young players into Superstars with some luck.

Just curious - I just have always figured the majority of Live fans stay true to the real NBA rosters and go from there, but I always run the fantasy draft and play it out about 10-20 seasons with a few team switches along the way...

It depends, if I was running a dynasty myself then I'd prefer real rosters. But back in the day when I ran it with my roomates, it was fun to have a fantasy draft and build our team.

Hopefully, the 360 version will have the EA locker ala Madden series--so maybe I can run a league or a dynasty with my ex-roomate in Washington DC. We can just spawn our games when we need to play them. But considering that the NBA Live team is light years away from what the madden team has done, i don't expect to have that feature or anything close till bout 2009.

at least you have something to look forward to :)

I prefer real rosters....although, it's kinda annoying seeing as every year i play with Detroit and now they have a way too strong team. Maybe this year i'll try something diff.

But generally i like real rosters and make trades from there so that i know what rosters each team has. Just some familiarity

Yeah, that's how I felt at first (about familiarity) but after a while (maybe a season) I find myself getting to know the Live teams pretty well, though I typically play a handful of games during the season, and then play through every game of the playoffs. I prefer it to using the real rosters -- I just get bored with that -- but it's really funny when you are watching an NBA game, and you just SWEAR that Role Player X was just on another team -- only to realize you are thinking of your Live teams lol

i personally never use the fantasy draft. i have used it once, along time ago. i think i played the game til i got bored(i forget the year) then stopped like normal, but when the next year's info started coming out i installed it again and ran the fantasy draft. i have done sim franchises before where i used the draft. i always put myself in last when i do these.

i always start with the real roster and play for a few months and after that i'll try to do a fantasy draft!!! i like doing the fantasy draft but i don't like when superstars don't get pick first. for example: shaq and duncan never get pick first or second, always top 10!!!

I personally hate the ideas of fantasy drafts. I think you should just keep it real. That's just me though.

Well!

Postby robjv1 on Sat Sep 10, 2005 6:39 pm

Well good grief -- so far it looks like the majority of people do prefer using the real rosters, as I'd suspected -- but I'm glad there are enough of us fantasy draft people that EA keeps the feature in the game, because without it I'd be a lot less interested in playing!

Good to know!

I try it from time to time just out of boredom but it's kinda hard to manage especially if you're trying to find a particular player

I use fantasy draft so i can build my team from scratch, i remember havin Lebron James, Kevin Garnett, Yao Minh, and Tracy MCGrady on the same team, and that was my first season.

I usually do real rosters until I get bored with them (which will take a while), then I do a fantasy draft.

I like Fantasy Drafts myself. I get bored pretty easily of dynasty mode, i end up starting like 6 new dynasties. Hopefully this year is the year i can keep a team tho.

I prefer real rosters because I'm a realism freak first and foremost, but also because it offers more of a challenge. I do like to run a couple of fantasy draft Dynasties on the side for fun though.

fantasy draft is fun when you have played with the real roster for a while and you are kinda bored. when nba live 05 came out last year, i played with the real roster for 2 or 3 months, then i got tired of it and began the fantasy draft. well, i don't put myself in the 1st position so i would get the best players, most of the tiime in the top 15.

i don't know for some reason, i start another dynasty while i am in like the 9 or 10th year of the dynasty. in the past three years, i finished 3 full 25? years of dynasty, mostly siming over the season just to finish it.

Hmmm

Postby robjv1 on Tue Sep 13, 2005 7:29 am

Really? How do you find it to be more challenging? I wonder if people fantasy draft "differently". Do you find that the real rosters just have a better spread of talented players on each team and that the computer makes stupid decisions when drafting?

I usually give myself a lower pick, and build a team based on the kind of team I like to play (slower, half-court type team with great defense) and not just draft the best players. I also make sure the fantasy picks alternate from the East to West conferences to ensure that one conference doesn't get too unbalanced (especially in light of the fact that not many trades are made by the computer in Live 06) Maybe that helps it, because I've found it to be pretty challenging -- even more challenging then using the real thing. I usually have to move players around a lot to really get what I want... and often have problems with having too many older players. I used to strictly play with the real rosters, but I find it a lot more interesting this way... just seems to be a lot less predictability. But hey that's me -- just hoping they keep the feature in.

Also -- I don't think most people do this -- but I almost always just play one or two full dynasties in the year between games. I rarely will stop a dynasty and start a new one. That's why I kind of wish EA would pay more attention to the depth or personality (or lack of) in the created players once you get 15 - 20 seasons in. I don't understand the point of allowing you to go 25 years, if most people get bored of it after 10. I will often create a lot of players (superstars, role players, etc.) and throw them in the dynasty as I go along after about ten years, just so I can have a little name reconigition haha.

It's more difficult to amass a really strong team, especially if you pick a weak team with very little to trade.
