Keeps score close / any possible way to have good defense?

Postby Gntlz on Fri Jan 13, 2006 2:45 am

Two questions (after a whole season):
1. Is the computer cheating? I can't open more then 10 points gap from the pc team. (although i win almost every game...)
whenever im about 10 points from him suddleny Shak miss every dunk,
and every shot of the pc gets in...

2. Any way to have good defense? the only defense is trying to steal the balls. you can't block, take rebound or make the buzzer call 24 secs.
The pc can take 5 rebound in a row, can never be blocked, scores every crazy shot no matter who defends him (I can put Shak on his worst player, and he will score...)

Any suggestions...??

1. Turn off CPU Assistance in the settings. That is a feature to keep games close, so it's likely that you have that turned on.
2. Not really a straight answer, but you could try to increase the sliders User On-ball Defence Assist and User On-ball Physical Defence. Also, perhaps lower the CPU's shooting slider.

If you did that on purpose somehow, please stop double (quintouple) posting.

As for the original poster, the thought that stealing is the only form of D is entirely misguided. It's actually one of the least forms of defending. Use your right analog stick, push it in the downward direction, and prevent players from getting to the basket, use double teams, rotate, play some zones, mix up your Defensive looks, etc. I have a feeling you don't know a ton about the game of b-ball, if you think stealing and blocking are what defense is...

i agree with Bighort. for me the best way to defend the CPU is to control one of your big men (C's or PF's) depends on who are you comfortable with speed, defense ability, then use the defensive crouch. As a tip, i try to form some sort of a triangular formation with the defender on the ball and the goal. Try pressing the right analog stick down with the turbo button together so even in the defensive stance position (crouch) your controlled big man moves quicker. It takes a lot of practice but once i figured it out, the CPU almost most of the time tries to drive but gets cut off by my controlled big man, passes the ball around and end up shooting outside. Which brings to the next more important part, to get that crucial defensive rebound, (if not you just spoiled one good defensive stand for the damn tip in by the CPU) when the shot is in the air, go for a good position just at the semi circle line and not under the goal, hit shift so you won't be controlling your big man, then once the ball hits the goal, hit shift then jump. I find this very effective and was able to lessen the Offensive rebounds by the CPU.

Just remember, defense is important but just the other half of winning the game. You should have good offensive sets as well and good shot selections to counter the CPU's momentum.

I dont think so, CP assistance should be turned on, did you ever wonder why no one on your team contests a shot on superstar? Turn it on and you will see the opposing team miss more shots. Now youll be able to play the weakside and provide help when need be

CPU Assistance is a function EA has in many of their sport games. It controls the game in a manner so that one team can't get away from the other by too many points; if one of the teams gets a nice 10 point lead, the other team will start making almost every single shot. And also, the cpu will prevent the team in the lead from making any big shots, thus making it extremely hard to make any big shots (which is why Shaq will start missing dunks, Allen start shooting bricks and Nash throwing interceptions).
