controller issues

I am on a pIV 2.66 ghz with 512 mb ram and a radeon 9800 128 mb card.
Problem is i can run run the game fine with my keyboard
But wen i plug in my ancient microsoft sidewinder dual extreme controller the game does not launch.
It shows nba live 06 screen and quits with dr. watson starting up
So how can i play with my controller. ia m on xp.
