8 man roster bonus

Sun Feb 12, 2006 5:18 am

Hey folks,

Sorry in advance for the lengthy post, but it might be worth the read. I am doing a drafted dynasty to see if it works. And I found out you can have a highly effective team by just drafting 8 players. I got the idea because I play city league bball and we only have 8 on the team. So I figured if a group of 8 normal people can handle the rigors of a full game, NBA quality players should thrive in that environment and with more floor time. Here was my team.

C Tyson Chandler(77)
PF Dwight Howard(84)
SF Boris Diaw(72)
SG Andre Iguodala(83)
PG Sebastian Telfair(74)

Back ups:
PG Nate Robinson(71)
SG/SF Kyle Korver(64)
C/PF Joel Pryzbilla(64)

AS you can see, I set up a primarily defensive team, with the exception of Korver. So with a defensive base and offensive weapons off the bench the team was rock solid with no weak link back ups putting in pointless minutes.

I did this test something else out too. I know you can't have any less than 8 on a team...so what if someone got injured? I simmed a season and not one player got injured. I simmed another season, and no one got injured...so having 8 on a team guarentees an injury free season.

I know this is exploiting a quirk in the game. And no NBA team has 8 players on their roster. But some teams out there have 8 player rotations. i think it also evens out how stingy the salary cap gets later on. I mean, I can actually afford to do some off season moves without salary cap restrictions because I am not wasting money on players I won' use.

Another thing I found is, Training is alot more efficient this way too. The players you want to gain skillz, gain skillz. Because in the off season, when you train the whole team, how often have you wasted many of those training sessions and points on players you don't use much?

(If you do use a full 15 man roster, consider releasing players in the off season that you don't want to use up your training sessions on and re-sign them after the full team training session)

One last thing I found is with a 8 man roster, the Primacy ratings don't go wierd. Only on my team. I still saw a season where Amare Stoudamire scored 10 pts per game on another team. hehe. I mean, in 8 simmed seasons, my main scorers were always getting more shots than the defensive specialists.

As you see, my team isn't stacked with high rated players...at least not compared to other teams that are put together by the computer via Fantasy Draft. But my team always has a respectable record because of a predictable rotation.

So if you are interested in any of this, try it out. You may be pleasantly surprised how less is sometimes more. :)

Interesting discoveries. :) The Primacy bit is easy to explain though; without injuries, there's no recalculation.

AH ok. That makes sense. Thanks for the response.

I pick only 8 men when I draft too. But my player got injured when I played. Usually, I don't sim a 8 men roster, it seems a little bit unconsistent to me. I wonder how many wins you have when you sim with your roster.

Did you add more people to your team? Or did you keep it at 8? If you keep it at 8, players don't get injured at all. I played many games and simmed a few seasons. No injuries. From game to game, basketball isn't a consistant sport. But if you have a solid team, you will get consistant results at the end of the season. I find the 8 man roster more consistant statwise because of what Andrew said about Primacy rating and not having injuries.

My team made the playoffs almost every season I played. There was a season I missed it because I needed to trade some players away because they were getting too good. Next time I won't draft so many rookies. Because by year 7 all my starters were 80-99 rated. So they demanded so much money. When I play I like to obey the salary cap.

Remember, since you have less players, you have to draft effectivly. You need a balance between strong D and players who can mix it up offensively. Role players are very important to a team's success. You don't want an all star team, just a solid team.

yup, because on the court, I'm your daddy. haha. Just Kidding. :)

Thanks for the replies all. If anyone else has tried this out, let me know how it is going.

I mean when I play the game myself with a 8 men roster, my players can still get injured on the court.

Really? I haven't had anyone ever get injured on the court. And I played a lot of games in that dynasty. Do they remain injured after the game?

Mon Feb 13, 2006 5:07 pm

Yes, and I have to play with only 7 men. I set the injury to 60.

hmm...I thought the roster can't go below 8 active. Interesting. Well, I will keep my eye out for that.
