How do I manage my staff?

Postby Shoot1stAskL8R on Wed Sep 03, 2008 12:54 pm

Long series of questions coming up... for the Gamecube version (don't taze me!) which should be similar to the PC/XBOX versions?

I. How should I deal with assistant coaches?
I've hired a C+ overall who specializes in defense... except they have a "D" in Defense.
  • Will that mean they can make stoppers, albeit very-very slowly?
  • Or does that mean they'll improve players' defense faster than a non-specialize D-coach would?
Same C+ coach has an A in offense.
  • Will they be able to make superstars at all (as long as the stat requirements are met)?
  • Or do I have to find an offense specialist?
The coach is focusing on someone these three weeks.
  • Does that mean they're neglecting everyone else on the team?
I sometimes have the messages "Pau Gasol gained a stat!" or "Damon Jones gained a stat!" every other month.
  • I focused on Gasol for a month, but nothing happened after that month.
  • Since then I've been focusing on say Raja Bell every week for the past three months.
  • Am I just very unlucky to see no growth?
II. How should I deal with scouting the next class?
  • Player "potential" is the same as "DESTINY" right? (I have a very accurate scout if that helps)
  • How well does a scout's "specialty region" help?
III. How should I deal with trainers?
Can I hire multiple trainers (eventually) to fix multiple injured players? (A really bad string of luck this year)
IV. Stats differences
How widely will a few points be?
  • Comparing Joe Johnson to Brent Barry, both are accomplished shooters yet Joe Johnson (83 3P) smokes Barry (80 in 3P) in a shooting competition.
V. Inside-scoring Superstar
I probably just suck at this one, but everytime I try to do something fancy with Kobe in the paint --either against 1 or 2 defenders-- he misses completely or gets tacked for an offensive foul.
  • Any reason why just hitting "Layup/Dunk" in the paint is more effective than "Holding superstar then tap layup/dunk?"

If I don't reply back in a timely manner, thanks in advance.

It doesn't really matter what specialty you coaches are to make stoppers, they will come if they meet the requirements. It is quite ironic that a defensive coach sucks in training defense.

Or does that mean they'll improve players' defense faster than a non-specialize D-coach would?

Of course. Coaches who specialize in something are more efficient at it. But then again, that coach is D-rated, you shouldn't expect too much in the first place

Will they be able to make superstars at all (as long as the stat requirements are met)?

Or do I have to find an offense specialist?

See above.

The coach is focusing on someone these three weeks.

No it only means that the players you pick will have a higher chance of gaining stats.

I focused on Gasol for a month, but nothing happened after that month.

Ah just got unlucky try again. But also keep in mind of their Learning and Work Ethnic (and possibly the DESTINY) rating, effects how much stats they gain.

Am I just very unlucky to see no growth?

What have you been focusing on? If it's defense, well...

II.
Player "potential" is the same as "DESTINY" right? (I have a very accurate scout if that helps)

Most likely. Good potential = good destiny. But there are only 5 potential levels and 7 (or 8) DESTINY levels so I'm not exactly sure how it's supposed to work out.

How well does a scout's "specialty region" help?

Not 100 % sure, but I think they are more accurate when scouting potential draftees from that region.

III.
Can I hire multiple trainers (eventually) to fix multiple injured players? (A really bad string of luck this year)

Yes, but you'll either have to hire crappy coaches/scouts or wait a very, very long time for your staff salar. 3's the maximium for any position.

IV.
Comparing Joe Johnson to Brent Barry, both are accomplished shooters yet Joe Johnson (83 3P) smokes Barry (80 in 3P) in a shooting competition.

Not too big if you use player shot control. You'll generally drain it if you time it right.

V.
Any reason why just hitting "Layup/Dunk" in the paint is more effective than "Holding superstar then tap layup/dunk?"

Holding superstar triggers a more complicated move, and it might lead to Kobe getting tackled. According to a FAQ, he performs a fake followed with a layup, so I don't know how that will turn out. I usually only use superstar in wide open court.

About casol not improving, sometimes they're just unsuccessful trips because i remember that this happend when i trianed lebrone james. In two different dynastys he didn't improve when i trained him and the ability that i trained him in was a high grade. Players don't always improve on every trip but make sure they do improve every time, if you can afford it get two assistants and use both assistants on one player. Whenever i do that my player always improve, but i usually have three assistants. But at times even with two or three there may be one assitant who didn't have a successful coaching session. Like sometimes if you have two assistants and you use them on one player, this rarely happends but sometimes one of your assistants may have an unsuccessful coaching session. But when you do train one player with two assistants you will always get results.

I was hoping that a D-level Defense w/Defensive specialty meant they were probably C-level. Or is that wishful thinking?

Bleargh. Then I must be on a terrible stroke of luck. It seems the players I don't focus on gain stats. And in areas where they're not being trained in. Some in areas they're already good at (which I guess is lucky on my part because these should be harder to raise?).

How frequently is a single player supposed to/can they gain stats? Weekly, monthly, annually... (I've only seen my players gain once a year, though I may be focusing on the wrong players?)

JT_55 wrote:But also keep in mind of their Learning and Work Ethnic (and possibly the DESTINY) rating, effects how much stats they gain.

Are these viewable on the gaming console versions? Do these ratings change from year-to-year or are the consistant with players? Would the game version (PC, XBOX, etc.) matter? (And if that's the case, is there a single file with said stats for all the pre-existing players?)

JT_55 wrote:Holding superstar triggers a more complicated move... I usually only use superstar in wide open court.

I look at the EA video and see them using it to get out of a jam, hence that's when I try to use them... and why I keep getting tackled. (in this case, with Inside Scorer in the paint)

Is there a message that pops up saying "Coach didn't train the player. Finds them too stupid"? Several messages of mine say "I see more potential in this player" -- yet they only increase stats once a year (twice if you count pre-season training).
If I don't reply back in a timely manner, thanks in advance.

No there's no message that says an assistant didn't train a player, you just won't see results from the player that the assitant that you used. For example if you train casol and you 2 assistant lets the assistants names are agulira and piedros, and you trained casol in offense with both assitant for 100 percent. At the end of the month every one in a while you'll get results from agulira but no results from piedros. But if you use two assistants on one player you're always gaurunteed to see results. Rather it be one result like in offensive awareness or more resultse.
