Player Birthdates

Postby Andrew on Tue May 27, 2008 12:55 am

As you may have seen in the thread discussing the rosters for NBA Live PC, the issue of player ages has come up. Unless the birthdates are rolled back accordingly, players in the roster will appear younger than they currently are since NBA Live 06 begins in the 2005/2006 NBA season. So far, most people have expressed a preference for editing the birthdates but in the interest of democracy (and gaining as much feedback as possible), I've decided to highlight the issue and put it to a vote to see what most people would prefer.

Pros:
  • Correct player ages
  • Players are therefore more likely to decline and retire in a more realistic timeframe

Cons:
  • Player bios aren't going to be 100% accurate

It's a fairly small tradeoff, I was originally leaning towards leaving the birthdates alone so that the bios would be correct but as I mentioned it appears that rolling them back is a more popular solution than I had anticipated. I think it would be for the best to roll back the birth years but if you have any thoughts to the contrary feel free to post them so that it can be discussed.

If there's no easy/bug-free way to start the dynasty in 2008 or avoid 17 year-old players, then I'd go with the birthdate rollback. I remember in live 2001, I played with a 16 year old Tyson Chandler.

Looks like that's the popular option early on. The thought occurs that we can always include a batch file that restores the original, correct birthdates for those who are bothered by it.

I'll second to Andrew's thoughts. I believe there are gamers out there who would like to keep a certain player for longer, rather than having him retire after playing like 2-3 seasons. :)

I was referring more to people who wanted the correct birthdates for accuracy in the bios but that would certainly be of interest to some players as well.

Yeah I think that option A combined with a batch file to roll back the birth dates is the best option. To be honest I don't know how many actually read the player bios too intensely, and its only a figure whereas having players being too young in Dynasty mode etc would just be weird.

honestly player bios have been garbage after Live 2000/2001, which coincidentally is around the time they started focusing on the console versions.

Overwhelming support for rolling back the birthdates so far. Seems like that would be the way to ultimately go, with a batch file for anyone who would prefer accurate bios.

Indeed, it doesn't look like there'll be much opposition to the approach.
