PC version Lags during the last min of quarter?

Postby TC#10 on Wed Oct 05, 2005 1:54 pm

Hey I was wonderin if ppl with the PC version have the same problem as i do during the last min of a quarter. It seems that the gameplay lags till the quarter is done. But then it works normally till the last minute of the next quarter. I've tried setting the Details level to the minimal, and the resolution to 640x480 and still there is lag! It pissed me off so much that i didn't even finish the game and exited whenever this happened. I also updated my graphics' card drivers, it's a ATI RADEON X300 with a memory of 64mb, i'm runnin the game on my laptop which is 1.8GHz... so i'm thinkin it's just the game that's screwin up, not my cpu.. But does anyone have any sugguestions on what i can do?

I'm not sure if this will fix it or not but give it a shot. Try turning off anti-virus and other programs that run in the background to give the PC more processing power and RAM to run the game. Even on my system which is fairly good it makes a noticeable difference.

Also this should be in the Technical Question section of the forum not here, so it'll probably be moved. Just make sure you check where it's best to post new topics, and probably also check that area for any related issues

Thanks for replyin and the tip that i'll keep in mind next time Ty-Land! I will try and disable norton, and other background programs off, but i was wondering if anyone else had the same problem or is it just my cpu that lags during the last min of a quarter... And one more question, does anyone know what the Triple Buffer and V-sync does? Should i turn them on/off to make the gameplay free of lags?

v-sync avoids the so-called "tearing",where 1 part of the image gets ripped away from the other. (hard to explain in words) anyway, both of those will slow down gameplay so dont use it unless you have a decent system.

here's a tip: since you're running from a laptop and all, get rid of resource hog Norton. it's worthless and slows everything down. uninstall it completely and get the free AVG or something from free.grisoft.com. its as good as norton but uses minimal resources. still best to shut it down while playing though.

Thanks for the tips, unfortunately i'm not using Norton, i'm using F-Secure which does not allow me to disable it, even when i go in Task Manager and End Task, it still running... Also i've tried turning off the Buffer and Sync in the detail settings, it seems like it lags even more, right from the beginning to the end of the game. My problem is that gameplay only lags at the last minute of play for each quarter, I'm thinkin that this is becuase the clock is running at 59.9, 59.8, 59.7 and so forth, so this might be a factor... I don't know but it's pissing me off cause when it's a close game and it's going down to the wire, the gameplay lags, and my timing is off when i shoot. Is there a patch that i can download that can help the cause or is it just the ATI graphics card actin up not the actual game?

uninstall always works ;)

about the drivers... where did you get them? if they came from ati, try getting the latest ones from your laptop manufacterer site.
other than that i'm clueless as to why it only happens in the last minute.

this is not based entirely on graphics cards
i have the same exact problem, and i have noticed that my frame rate is not fast enough to keep up w/ the game clock
in the last minute of quarters, the clock runs by TENTHS of seconds, so the game must refresh a lot faster to run smoothly, or so i observed
b/c like if the clock stops for fts or something, its fine.
just get a lead big enough that u don't have to worry about losing b/c of that lag.

Yes! finally an answer to the problem! But we need to find a solution to fix this up. I don't like it when it's a close game and i can't get a basket in cause of the lag. I've even tried to turn off the shot clock but it still doesn't help. I think it's because of the time on the scorebox in the bottom left corner that causes the lag...

bullshit, if your framerate is not fast enough to refresh 10 times in a second than you're playing an entire game below 10 fps?? that's a slideshow.

i'm looking into possible causes and solutions but haven't got a clue so far.

I have the exact same problem. I also see that it is the clock that causes this, because when it stops and i get to inbound the ball, the game runs perfectly normal, but when it restarts again, then there is a lag. It is also under the last minute of each quarter that it does this quirky thing. Is it a game bug? I hope someone could post a fix for it.

yep, I have the same problem....once it's in the last minute of each quarter it lags....some type of bug, I dunno....any fix for this?!?

my specs:
P4 2.7GHz
128MB ATI Radeon 9250
80GB Hard Drive
512MB RAM

I run lighting ON, player detail HIGH, environment MEDIUM, V-Sync & Triple Buffer OFF, Filtering ANTISTROPIC (although it doesn't matter what I have it on, it still lags in last minute of each quarter), player bench LOW, resolution 1024 x 780(?!?), reflections OFF or LOW, and everything else at average levels....

game runs perfectly until last minute of each quarter....any help would be appreciated....cheers....

i dont know about the lag, but turn of ANI filtering! it's the most resource needing thing for graphic cards. better turn on V-sync instead.

the thing is I've tried it on BILINEAR or TRILINEAR but it doesn't make a difference....I'll try turning on V-sync instead....I've noticed when I change to a different camera angle that is further away from the action then it is less likely to lag as bad in that last minute, but it still lags....is very strange....

you might not see it, but anisotropic filtering stresses your card alot. it's not worth it cuz it doesn't look any better ingame anyway.

switching from 32 to 16bit won't give noticable performance gaines. all cards are designed for 32bit these days.

Last minutes jerky...

Postby vax on Tue Oct 18, 2005 6:39 pm

Using fraps, I tested the fps during the entire game and also during the last minute of the game. No differences, always about 35 ( all turned on, 1280X1024 ).But when I switch to long distance shootout the frame drops again. Could be something regarding the clock on the backboard, when it's shown the last minute the game become jerky. Damn, they should solve it with a patch SOON.
