Money has nothing to do with it, but it is something that I've put a lot of work into, and it is protected by copyright laws (see the readme file). You need to ask permission before you distribute a modified version of someone's work, be it a roster patch or graphics update.
Obviously, it's not a huge deal as there is no money involved, but you have essentially stolen my work and passed it off as your own, which is illegal but more importantly something that is frowned upon in the NBA Live community. You were still required to ask my permission, and if you have used my work as a base then you should give credit where credit is due.
Taking a shortcut by using someone else's work without permission and then not even giving credit is just poor. If you had approached me and asked if you could modify the NLSC rosters to make an online friendly version, chances are I would have agreed. But you didn't do that, so like I said you're essentially stealing my work, something that is not only against Internet copyright law, but also against the spirit of the community.
I don't want money for the use of my roster patch as a base, because I do not (and will not) charge money for my roster patch. But I am entitled to credit for my work, and if the patch is to be distributed elsewhere, especially if it's modified, then you have to get my permission first.
Really, the legal issues are of little concern, because it's hardly something to get worked up about in terms of legality. It's more about the values of the community.
