Has anybody else tried this?

Sun Aug 03, 2003 7:05 pm

The biggest gameplay problems for me are the blocks and offensive rebounds. I can rack these up with a +20 differential to the computer

I have tried many patches, and really...none have been to my satisfaction

Now there are fundamental flaws in the game that we can't do anything about...I can get the o-board off a missed freethrow 75% of the time. That's no good. And once you know the ai's tendencies (like jacking up 3's)...then it's easy to know when to go for the block

What I have done is turned both ratings for ALL players to 0 (50)

This way, blocking is only guided by the quickness of the player, how tall he is, his body type and how high he can jump.

Just like in real life.

Same with offensive boards, since it was too easy for me to get them, I figured I give everybody a minimum rating and if you get the board, you got it on your own merit

I have experienced extremely realistic results when I have simulated games. Especially with blocks.

When I have played against the cpu, I still have the advantage due to the aformentioned ai flaws...

no matter what anyone does, I will always get more blocks and more offensive boards than the computer and the cpu will always get more steals than me. Ok there have been times where I got more steals, but 90% of the time the cpu has a ridiculous steal advantage.

Back up you dbf file, and edit all blocking ratings to 0

let me know how it goes

oh and obviously, for even more realistic results you can decrease the jumping ability of all players by however much you think is good.

Though this will affect other aspects of the game...like dunking and such, so I wouldn't decrease the ratings too much :)

Oh sorry I forgot to mention, having everyone set to 0 (50) is ideal when playing against other people...vs the cpu, I have edited some players and added a little bit to their block and o-board ratings

I just got done playing 1 half of bulls vs pacers (7 minutes, superstar)

I had 3 offensive boards compared to 1 by the cpu...and that one was a put back dunk. Mine were well earned...just a matter of being at the right spot at the right time.

Gone are the days of the ball being nowhere near the player but ending up in his hands anyway.

blocks? 7-3 my advantage. Like I said, I'll always get more blocks than the cpu because I know what it likes to do...blocks are a lot harder to come by, though. It's not my fault that the cpu is so predictable and only has one post move for all players (with 2 varieties...one fading away, the other one just a simple turnaround)

going back to adding a little bit to some player's ratings...

let's take elton brand for example...part of his overall rating comes from his ability to block shots and get offensive boards (leads the league). So by having these set to the minimum I have a hard time having his overall rating match what it should be.

Not only that, but elton brand should be more aggressive than anyone in the game in the offensive glass...he gets 4 a game or something in real life. That's ridiculous. So I'm going through my rosters and adding a little bit to each players block and o-board ratings, depending on their abilities.

I think I've given Theo Ratliff a 56 block rating...which is going to be the highest probably

I might give adonal foyle 57...but that's as high as I'm gonna go

I'm really happy as to how this has worked out for me

sorry for the long posts

Sun Aug 03, 2003 8:21 pm

ok I'm really excited about this...I actually got beat in the offensive board department

that's the first time ever

7-5 advantage paces...jeff foster and scott pollard had one put back slam each, and there was even a sequence where the pacers got 2 or 3 o-boards in a row (first jermaine missed, then pollard tried to put it back twice)

As for blocks? 13 to 5...jermaine o'neal was getting murdered by tyson chandler. That kid is built for blocking shots. Again, the ai's predictable post play allowed me to completely shut down jermaine.

That's an issue I can't do anything about. Teams that rely on post play are easy to beat in this game.

and of course the cpu got its possession back from my advantage in blocks with a 12-4 steal advantage. But if you think about it, I should have a blocks advantage because I have eddie curry and tyson chandler in my front line as well as donyell marshall at the small foward spot.

I think I'll work on steals next...try to balance them out a little more.

The only way I can completely balance out steals is the way dk did it, but then the game is too slow, the reduced quickness completely kills use of the freestyle controls and it just isn't that much fun.

Gotta go for a balance of realism and fun

Does the quickness rating really affect the freestyle moves? Cool, didn't know that before.

Sun Aug 03, 2003 11:34 pm

yes, quickness affects ball handling overall...a player can have 80 dribbling, but if he has crap for quickness then that 80 dribbling rating is pretty much wasted

there are few things worse than trying to dribble and have the ball drop like a 2000 pound rock straight to the ground

I still don't get how they could even do this

you'd figure it'd be simple...big men have different freestyle moves to that of guards. Unless of course that big man is versatile like c-webb and can pull of some moves. But with a guy like kandiman you shouldn't even be able to attempt crazy ass dribble moves

An improvement that will be in NBA Live 2004.

Isn't the blocking ability changed by the jumping data????

I gave players who aren't good blockers as centers ( like L. Wright ) less jumping poitns. and now he isn't making 4 BLKs a game ag. me :D

It really works with PG, cause a was sad of beein' blocked by J.Will and Fisher all the time.

that way, blocking is only guided by the quickness of the player, how tall he is, his body type and how high he can jump.

Yes it is. I've also decreased quickness, speed and jumping ability.

The roster that I'm using right now is producing as great a gameplay as I've ever experienced with this game

It's really really fun to play now. No more 20 steals for the cpu, no more of that 40 blocks crap

I don't even think about that stuff anymore, I just play

If I can get my brother to give me some webspace, I'll put it up for download so people can check it out. It really forces you to actually play basketball...but it isn't too slow or anything.
