When a player is lighting you up, or has been known to light you up in the past, try to get him in foul trouble. The easiest way to do this is to try and take a charge (this technique is more effective against postup players), but you can also go to the guy he's defending.

You can usually draw a shooting foul if you back down your defender in the low post, then tap Direction towards the basket and the shoot button when you reach the no-charge area (the semi-circle under the basket). Depending on your player, you should execute either a dunk, or preferably a layup. The CPU tends to catch you on the arm, sending you to the line for two, or if you convert, one.

Always challenge the outside shooters. Don't get caught by the picks, run around the player setting the pick and put your hand in the shooter's face. Don't allow him a good look.

Use the Team Strategy screen. Change the matchups to your advantage, designate players to be double teamed and/or pressured. Make sure that when the CPU makes a substitution, you change these settings accordingly.
