PC Gamer Review Quotes - NBA Live 2003

Tue Feb 04, 2003 3:41 pm

Quotes from PC Gamer February 2003 Volume 10 Number 2
NBA Live 2003 for the PC Final Verdict 63%

Highs: New Control Scheme; gets the visual details right, huge number of animations.
Lows: Not even close to a Simulation; gameplay is way too fast; AI can't keep Up
Bottom Line: Fun in a hyperkinetic kind of a way, but it doesn't hold up under extended gameplay.

"A great-looking highlight reel posing as a basketbal game"
"Sorry simulation fans, but it looks like we've lost another one.

They gone on to say that much like the NHL franchise, the NBA Live series has now officially gone over to the darkside.

"Eschewing any any sense of realism for a graphics-focused, super- speedy, wow lookat that dunk (again) gameplay experience".

"Gameplay speed is also a major headache, both in how fast the game plays and that you need only play six or seven minute quarters to rack up 100 points per side. "Blocked shots and steals, which have always been an issue, are now worse than ever.

They mention that "free style controls are subtle in their effectiveness because you you need the reaction of a frightened cobra on uppers to keep up with the ball handler".

"Casual gamers who want an exciting basketball game are going to be thrilled with NBA LIve 2003 -- they should be, since the're the crowd for whom it was obviouly made.

"Those of us who were hoping for a game we could sink our teeth into will be left assed-out".

Hopefully this review will be posted on their site reviews, in the near future.

I agree completely! NBA Live has been turned into a childish version of NBA Jam!

How do you play a defective game right?

How do you play a defective game right?

When 6 foot guards can block shots like 7 foot centers, what's the point?

If every one can block shots, stuff and run like Road Runner, then what's the point! When defense is so compromised to animations, that once the animation begins, there is no way to stop a drive to the basket is totally outrageous!

Even as a arcade game this title is flawed. Look at the childish and stupid animations from the bench, which are repeated endlessly, with no way to turn them off. Look at the totally ourageous blocks!

Aside from the graphics and maybe freestyle control, this game is a gross dissapointment to anyone who expects realism!

Many of the flaws in this game cannot be fixed by editing ratings.

I feel very betrayed by EASports! I will never buy one of their sports titles again, without playing the demo and waiting for enough user reviews.

I wonder what the average age is, of those who defend this title?
I've been playing the NBA Live series since 1995.

I have been following the Live series since NBA Live 95. With this latest one, I agree, I felt betrayed too. EA Sports has no right to put the word SIMULATION in this game (and they have the guts to claim we have a choice to play it in either ARCADE or SIMULATION) . Any lawyers out there who knows if we can sue these guys!? :)

We can bitch and moan all we want. But the sad truth is they have a monopoly over the basketball genre in PC. You can boycott it ... OR you can find ways to make it playable. Zaxis and DK has posted tweaked rosters in an effort to make it close to a real sim. Toolkits and editors are available to change things you don't see fit.

Personally, I find it sad to what they have done. But instead of missing out on this otherwise very good game, I rather find ways to customize the game to satisfy my needs. If you have followed the game as long as I have, can't help but appreciate the progress they have done. It's not perfect ... but there are ways to work things out.

Spurs ranked 26th in roster update!

Why are the NBA Live Rosters so out of touch with reality?
Why are the Spurs, one of the best teams in the league, always ranked in the mid twenties or lower?

Not only has this game lost all sense of realism but it seems that so have the roster updates!

This is the team that just beat the Lakers and will probably become champions again (because of Chris Webber's injury).

Can someone recommend a roster update that is up to date and has realistic team rankings?

Thank You
