Installing Patches Problem (need help)

Hey, can anyone in here help me out with installing patches for my game? Whenever a patch tells me to save the file(s) in the player folder, I can't find the player folder anywhere. For example, when I go to the "render" folder. I see a bunch of files in .VIV format and when I click on them a Windows box pops up saying choose a program to open the file with. I also downloaded EAZip and I tried to open the .VIV with it but nothing happens. Can someone please help me out?
