Shooting 3 pointers?

Mon Dec 02, 2002 2:22 pm

I'm using DK's rosters (29/11/02 version) (which are great BTW) but I'm having serious trouble shooting 3's. I'm using the Raptors who have 4 or 5 guys with 80 or above ratings on 3 pointers but I'm like 2 for 20. 8 min Q's, Starter, Simulation. Any suggestions?

It can be tough sometimes, obviously releasing at the right time is important, using screens to free you helps, posting up and going up for a shot and then passing to the open man waiting helps a lot, shooting from the sides seems to give more makes.

Hope I helped

In case you are new to the game...

First of all you need to master the technique of shooting jump shots - which can be explained by telling you that you need to release the shoot-button just before you reach the top of your jump...but it´s not something that people can teach you. You´ll have to figure out the exact timing yourself through hours and hours of playing. If you want to make it easier, then you probably should make sure that "shot control" is set to "cpu".

Second...I find that the best trick for making treys is not TRYING to shoot treys, but instead only shoot them when somebody happens to be standing all alone with the ball right behind the 3pt-line. What I´m trying to say is that you should let the 3pt-opportunity come to you and not make up your mind that "NOW I´m gonna hit a trey!!". If you really need to make a 3-pointer on a particular possesion then you should go to the strategy-section for a minute and find a 3-point play to run, memorize where you need to pass the ball, and execute the play.

And...if you can´t get that to work. And if you can´t find open treys through post-ups, then you should try moving your best 3pt-shooter (with the ball) right behind the line, pump-faking ´till your defender jumps up in the air, and then sending off the uncontested shot as your opponent is landing or recovering from his landing.

Funny because i am shooting in the mid-70's with DK's roster doing just what Ompibomp said.

You have to let the three's come to you, not decide you are going to shoot them. Swinging the ball, kicking from the post to the weakside guard are great ways to get the open look.

It is near 100% if you get a wide open look.

Of course I use the Celtics as well so i have quite the arsenal.
Walker
Pierce
S. Williams
E. Williams
Delk
And even a little Walter McCarty from time to time gets TOMMY POINTS from the deep sea of three.

I think Delk is leading the league in percentage, Walker in Atempts, and the rest are all mid pack.

I definantly have trouble hitting wide open 3's. I like posting up with Webber and kicking to Christie, Peja Or Damon Jones (All Have The 3 Ball Icon) But no matter how wide open they are they don't seem to hit unless someone is on them. I'll miss wide open 3's but I'll run up the court and jack up a J-Will 3 Ball and it'll go in no problem. Just gotta keep playin. DK, why in the world did you take Cleaves off IR, I use auto subs and when it said Mateen Cleaves for Damon Jones I was like dear god no :(

i dont get this
an open 3 is one of the easiest things in the game
u do a isolation, then when the d collapses onto you, you pop it out to an open 3 (often in my case, like joe) a christie or a peja, and i just dont miss
but u cant just bomb away u have to pick your time
and the plays for '3 point shooters' is just obscene coz i mean, they just stand there, theres no screening for em, they go to a wing and just stand there, how are they supposed to him em.

also, (u probably knew this) when the other team calls out "3" (when ur in d) that is the only thing theyre going to do. so go to the shooters and get in their face, sometimes if u defend em well they will run with the ball to the other side of the court just to get an open look, its so stupid

I agree you've got to pick your spots when shooting 3's. I think one of the keys is establishing the post game and getting the defenders to commit and then hitting the open man for 3. Tyrone Hill hit a 3 on me last game
