Direct Internet Connection Games

How come when I try to host a game all that shows up is "Waiting for connection..." and it has my IP underneath. Nothing ever happens after this screen.

And after playing one game against someone else, I am unable to connect to other people's IP's for some reason. Anyone know what's wrong or how i can get these options to work properly?
