Is patching ILLEGAL ??!!

Fri Aug 29, 2003 12:29 pm

A friend of mine who works as a game developer has told me that any modifications or so called 'patching' is illegal. Companies don't really act on it b/c it could only boost their sales but it is still illegal. I found this weird b/c lots of game developers promote patching (in the case of NBA LIVE 2003, they tried to provide an easy way to patch)

What this essentially means is that, somebody who creates a patch cannot talk about his rights when others simply copy and distribute their art works.

Any lawers here? Please prove me wrong

if your friend is telling the truth, than patching is illegal like burning music is illegal  (if you don't get it than you are an idiot, it means that it is illegal but your not gonna get in trouble 4 it.)

Of course I know, and even though I never make patches, I am not concerned about getting in trouble, that's not the point.

My point was that, if I simply copy somebody else's work and modify it and distribute it without crediting him, the original patcher can't say anything about it because his work was illegal. Of course, not that I will do such a thing.

I am just wondering whether he was right or not.

im pretty sure he's telling the truth... scinse it's not right to

if someone would do something like that, which has happend a few times (like with trailblazer32 ) but pretty much you just talk to the "patcher" that's stealing your work and get him to take all stuff like that away. also if he doesn't... you go public :). kinda let people know what's going on... the community will do the rest then...

It's not something the community has to be concerned about. EA is aware of the patches and has indicated that they have nothing against them. But your friend is probably right, patching is by definition illegal.

if patching were indeed illegal, why would ea release patching tools like the creation center for fifa 2003?
