Blocking - The aspect of defense ruined by OEM NBALive 2003.

Wed Dec 04, 2002 8:52 am

Hopefully Tim will fix this. *cough*

Blocking can equal four main things in real basketball:

-Block resulting in a turnover for offense with possession given to the blocker or a tip to a teamate. "Gimmie that"
-Block resulting in possession back to offense after being knocked out of bounds. "Get that Sh*t out of my house"
-Block resulting in jump ball.
-Block resulting in a made field goal "Only the finger tips"

In NBALive 2003 there is only 1 form a blocking. The "Get that sh*t out of here" blocking. And this is VERY POOR JUDGEMENT. If the game is close in the fourth quarter, possession of the ball far outweights blocking the ball out of bounds and giving it back to the other team. Add to the fact that it is nearly impossible to actually block someone once they initiate a dunk or layup animation, then blocking in this game serves no other purpose than to be show boaty and only slows the inevitable of the computer making another attempt at a 3 pt shot that will go in as he fades out of bounds with three people covering him just because you happend to miss the 8th or 9th block that possesion.

Also, blocking a ball all the way to the opposite baseline is F'ing stupid and has got to go.

I realize EA is trying to reach a larger market. They can do that by building an engine that produces the same OEM functionality they desire but allows tweaking for those who want to get RID of the sensless show boating non-productive bullsh*t some of us can't stand.

Let me clarify. I want to "Get that sh*t out of here." I just don't want it every possession, and I don't want it several times in a possession leading in the ball never coming back to me.

Make blocking and other abilities function on a gradient rather than a toggle switch. Or do both, but let us turn them off for christ sake.

You can call this a b*tch, I call it a desire for a real basketball game.
This is NBA Live, not NBA Jams.

The Product Manager who forgot this should be dragged out onto the street and beaten with plastic coffee stiring sticks. Instead they will probably give him a medal when they see the sales figures. Sales figures of a bunch of buyers who purchased with the hopes that this year will fix last years problems. You son of a b*tches, I used to work for a gaming company and I know your type.

But if you have a PC what is your other option? Exactly.

I'll leave my gripes about the AI for another day.

yeah agree with you puffs!

but another thing i don'y get with live 2003 is? how is it that computer can jump and intercept a pass and even when i'm inbounding the ball they can stick out their hands and deflect or steal my pass and i can't do it.

does anyone know how to do any of this?

I heard if you hit the charge button while between the path of the ball, the guys raise their arms and steal passes.

I have never been able to do it though.

you've touched on the 2 aspects of NBA Live 2003 that piss me off the most

#1 - the only way to lower the CPU's shooting percentage is to block their shot.. otherwise they will shoot nearly 100% of their shots..

#2 - wtf were they smoking when they came up with the blocking in this game.. just utterly stupid.

and wtf is up with the CPU launching and hitting 3's with 3 players all over him??

sure the patches will solve these problems to SOME extent.. but just gotta wonder who the hell was beta testing this game

i think they should change blocks to a two button press system
if you press it once..your player should contest the shot..(and it should LOWER THEIR FG% indefinitely..not the way it is right now where it doesn't do jack)
if you press it again in mid-air..he should swing and try to block the shot
if you swing at the right time you'll have more of a chance for a get that sh*t outta here block..but if you swing early or late..it should be a tip block
i don't know if anybody suggested this before..but i always thought this would be a good idea..

One thing I found greatly changes shooting percentages.

I discovered it after I just purchased a freestyle controller.

If you hold UP on the analogue while they are shooting the defender puts both of his hands up.

THIS GREATLY affects shooting percentages and allows you to set up proper rebounding. But it doesn't solve the problem of blocking that I mentioned before.

And most importantly, it doesn't stop the computer from doing the fading out of bounds 3 point shot that will always go in, if the CPU wants it to go in.

Anyhow, you really need a freestyle controller to truley tap into the defensive structure of this game apparently. (which sucks ass for those people who don't have analogue)

doh..is that the only way you can get your hands to stick up?
im planning on buying an analog controller soon...so right now im stuck with keyboard..but sometimes if i press my Take Charge button when im REALLY close to the player shooting..it causes my player to stick his hands up..seems random..anybody know?

I agree,, how often in the NBA do you see a 3point shot get blocked into the stands?.

Wed Apr 30, 2003 5:02 am

yeah i agree lol. Oh and how about the cool AI play where they gather 3 of their teammates to go on an adventure? You know the one where they go around the perimeter and the along the baseline, theres no way for YOU to stop it either. THey just merrily go along to the baseline and finally reach the destination, the goal. Then they just push you out of the way by walking since you can't actually stop them or steal the ball or do jack shit. So they lay it up. What an adventure.
