I dunno if this works for all platforms, or if it has been figured out by everyone already, but you can easily keep upgrading your team when you are already over the cap. And it isn't really cheating or cheesing like making 80 trades.
When the list of offseason things comes up, go through all of them except that when you finish the draft, just go to Trade Players or Start Season and skip actually entering the FA phase. The CPU will sim the FA phase, and how they always sign guys like Kidd for the min for one year, you now are randomly allocated 1 or 2 superstars with one year contracts.
One offseason, several years into my franchise, both Ray Allen (88) and Tim Thomas (85) signed with me in the offseason, as well as several lesser bench guys. I've had Rasheed and even Kidd sign with the Bucks after one season. The last draw I just did, finished first season and had Divac sign with the Bucks and got Coleman as a backup PF. It really makes the game a lot more fair rather then being perpetually stuck in cap hell and having the CPU get the superstars for one year rentals all the time.
