How to stop the game from crashing
By: refuze

Most of you are probably receiving crashes which send you back to the Desktop (this happens during the time when the game is loading). It usually depends on what type of computer you have and your videocard. New and powerful PC's out there can handle high-resolution patches but older computers can have trouble. I have found out a way to dimish crashes with a simple EAGraph Import Wizard trick.

Below is a list of the common .fsh files in NBA Live 2003 along with their file sizes that will stop the game from crashing. Those type of .fsh's are what patchers usually update for new cyberfaces, jerseys, etc. Please remember that there are possible combinations of naming those files such as bsho_away, etc. and this applies to all of them. If a patch you download is larger than these file sizes, they might be the ones that crash your game so be aware.

bsho.fsh - 11KB
hbnd.fsh - 6KB
player.fsh - 43KB (this is the first 2 letters of the player's first name and first 5 letters of his last name, ie. mijorda for Michael Jordan)
player_acc - 257KB (this is the first 2 letters of the player's first name and first 5 letters of his last name, ie. mijorda for Michael Jordan)
prxx.fsh - 175KB or 176KB

So now, here's the proven way on how to stop those crashes and convert those large file sizes (known as high-resolution patches) into the ones above. Follow the instructions carefully. I won't answer any questions that are already in this tutorial.

1. Download EAGraph (I'm assuming most of you have it already but if you don't, get it at http://www.nba-live.com or http://www.nbalive.org)

Image

2. When you finish downloading, open up EAGraph.exe and just ignore it for now.

Image

3. You also need a that has the same file size as the ones I listed above. So let's get Tony's Michael Jordan cyberface (43KB exact) from http://www.nbalive.org. Save the mijorda.fsh from the zip into your Desktop.

Image

4. Now go to the patch that has the large file size. In this case, we'll use Alex's Ray Allen cyberface (which is around 129KB) as an example. You can get it at http://www.nbalive.org. Put the raallen.fsh to the Desktop as well.

Image

5. So now we have both mijorda.fsh (43KB) and raallen.fsh (129KB).

Image

6. Go back to EAGraph and click File > Open (CTRL + O). Find Desktop and click on the mijorda.fsh so EAGraph will open that.

Image

7. You will see bhed at the left side of EAGraph. Click on it and the Michael Jordan face will appear.

Image

8. Click Tools > Import Wizard and choose "Import an existing external file..".

Image

9. The Michael Jordan cyberface will be shown smaller on the window. Click Browse, then go to Desktop and find raallen.fsh.

Image

10. Click Next and EAGraph will import the 129KB raallen.fsh to the 43KB mijorda.fsh cyberface.

Image

Image

11. Delete the 129KB raallen.fsh file and rename the mijorda.fsh to raallen.fsh.

Image

Image

12. Stick that in Ray Allen's folder (xplayer\raallen).

Image

Finished! (Y) We have successfully converted a 129KB file to a 43KB file. There is not too much quality loss in the new 43KB file, it still looks the same as the original ingame. Now do that converting technique with all the files that are larger than the ones above. I hope this tutorial has been helpful to you.

Nice work; a little while ago, I was experiencing a crashing problem when I was creating my Minnesota court patch. I thought it was the court until I figured out that it was Tony's Kevin Garnett face patch that was doing it. I just checked the file size of the Garnett face & it's 128 kb, which re-affirms your findings.

like i said in other threads refuze thanks alot ...i just wish i could figure out why my game always crashes when trying to play on the beach court :?

Yeah this is already done before, just like the way you do it in bsho files. But the reason why patchers sometimes uses the hi-res method is to make the cyberface look even better. Although this method reduces the size of the file, it also reduces the quality. What I do to avoid the crashing is to install some of the patches in the viv files. Since bchogan's courts are way better than the default, I just replaced the default ones with his directly in the viv. This saves much more space and really avoids the crahing although it's quite troublesome.

Mine does as well. I think it has to do with videocards. A lot of people with expensive cards don't get crashes. I'll see if I can figure out a way to stop this. I'll keep you updated.

ok...

Sun Mar 02, 2003 10:13 pm

ok, but what if you have a high resolution something and want to keep it in high res. what shuld you do then? does it work to import it in to the -.viv file and then play, or will the game still hack if you are using a 'bad' computer'?

If you have a good videocard and it can handle those large files, then don't change anything. This trick only applies to people who find their game to crash often with large patches installed.

I´ve notice that the crashes that I´ve with high-res faces were with patches that have the .fsh of the face, but dn´t change the head´s shape ( that means that they use the original from EA ), so I decide to extract the .o files of the headshape in the player folder and I don´t have a crash again

Great find refuze, but what are the numbers for the courts and jerseys?

Fri Aug 08, 2003 12:14 pm

Well, I've now hit rock bottom. My game crashes EVERY TIME I try to play a game, regardless of the teams I'm using. I went in and did the FSH file changes, but it didn't solve the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

Sat Aug 09, 2003 5:44 pm

my game crashes every time i try to use bchogan's cleveland patch...

the old one on travis lee's site works, but it's not as good...

argh

Sun Aug 10, 2003 2:34 am

Well, I figured out one thing, there was a file for the coaches update that I got a few weeks ago, apparently, that was causing it. Ever since I removed it, no problems.

.....

Sat Sep 20, 2003 2:31 am

hmm... i don't know if it's too late to post... i still got crashed when playing w/ Houston and SA home gms...
I've already got back every normal from jerseys, home court and coaches... I don't think the players are the problems since i checked every one the files are in the range refuze provided... + they both works fine while in road gms and practices...
What might be the problem? Thx

Download a new roster and check if it works with that.

My game crashes when i play a game with custom dornaseason

Sat Apr 24, 2004 5:46 am

I extract dornaseason from the game.

I open it with fshtool, and then i can edit the 0000 picture file.

I take the picture file, and replace the ad boards with my own.

I did this once, and the game loaded. I did it a second time (edited some new logos) and it never worked after. It even crashes my EAGE on occasions.

It says memory i too big.

How i fix it i do not know.

Any ideas?
