TO ALL WHO EXPERIENCE CHOPPINESS - A MUST READ!!!

System specs:
1.2 GHz CPU (Athlon)
512 Megs of DDR Ram
Geforce 4 MX 420 Plus
Ensoniq Creative Labs soundcard
Win 98 SE

Originally only had 256 Megs of DDR Ram & Geforce 2 MX

I 1st got the game to run by decreasing my soundcard acceleration in dxdiag to standard (some may require none or basic - I'd try them all). The mouse wasn't hooked up with an USB adapter.

Well this evening after I got home from work I experienced the same choppiness again. I made a slight change to my system. I have a ps/2 mosue but sometimes WIN98 doesn't see & I do a reboot and bam it sees the mouse. The mouse issues is none existent if I use a usb adapter for the mouse but the choppiness came back. I disconnected the USB adapter choppiness went away.

I posted this to help others diagnose their PCs to find the fix that best suites them. I haven't tried to turn the soundcard acceleration back up to advanced with the mouse hooked up without an adapter. But I get the feeling I'll be fine if I did.

Right click "My Computer", see how much memory you got, because I heard Win98 only can recognize 256MB

Win98 can recognize more than 256 MB of Ram, but it can't use more than 256 MB of RAM, so unless you change the OS, you're wasting half you memory.

If you can find someone with a copy of XP that you can use, I'd highly suggest the installation on a seperate partition (XP allows you to create a new partition during installation). DO NOT convert the partition to NTFS yet. This way, you can make sure all your programs respond to XP before making any permanent changes. If it works, you've got XP and Win98. If not, you can delete the information in the XP partition and basically reclaim the space (although the partition will remain it'll be like having a new hard drive, and you'll want to change your boot.ini file which is simple enough). XP doesn't seem to have issues with the game from what I've seen and. My setup is similar to yours, though with less RAM and slightly more processing power...

This guy has given his solution to his choppiness problem...the first guy says to try finding his answers in other threads...he posted in those threads!!! He's making a central thread to help out other people!

Now BBallFreak is telling the guy to buy XP (cause he better not be promoting pirating), when the guy (as he said in his post) already has the game working with no choppiness...

I turned the soundcard acceleration back to advance and live runs with no problem. The issue for me (probably others too) was the non-usb device connected with a usb adapter.

Yes, he gave his solution to the choppiness problem, but he still has a waisted 256 MB of RAM, meaning he's throwing away money. Forgive me for trying to help him solve that problem

As for Win XP and you suggesting that I suggested he should pirate it, you'll note that Windows XP's online registration works on 2 different computers, meaning he wouldn't have to pirate it or buy it, merely find a friend willing to let him use one of those registrations.

I guess no good deed goes unpunished.

BBallFreak, are you sure you can run 1 copy of XP on 2 different computers? If so, that would be great! I need to put it on my other machine but I haven't as I thought it was not allowed.

Yeah, I'm sure. Microsoft is greedy, but they're not THAT greedy. XP can indeed be installed and registered online on 2 different computers without a serious issue. If a situation arises where you need more than 2 computers registered (say for example you get a new computer that doesn't have the O/S) you can call them and actually get a registration code. I've helped someone do it before. He asked me to set up a home network using XP and I was in contact with Microsoft to register the 3rd computer in his house.

Could someone explain what is meant by a USB "adapter?" I'm not clear on whether the person who explained this issue has a PS/2 mouse or a USB mouse.

I did mys the other way,I have a usb mouse but I use the usb-to-ps2 adapter. before I did this I couldnt run the game on low setting I was still getting around 5to6 fps. I was on my way to buy winxp upgrade but it was 99.99 and if that didnt work I couldnt return it. so I read what MIDTOWNGIANTS posted and oh my god now I run the game at 1600 x 1200 res 32bit everything on max and getting around 50 to 60 fps. by the way this have to be the best looking Live I have every seen. I need to get better tho I only play on superstar and the cpu is kicking my @ss by like 50th points the 4 games I have played, but this the only game I get my @ss kicked and still have fun playing. Vote number 1 from me for sports game of the year.

ok i have a problem.....I built a Pentium 4 1.8ghz, 256 mb ddr ram, 128 mb ddr radeon 8500LE PC w/ a 40 gig and an 80 gig HD running xp pro, and I experience choppiness! And even w/ out everything completely maxxed! I play madden 2003 and nhl 2003 jacked up as high as it'll go w/ double resolution graphic add-ons and don't have 1 skip or jump. No usb adapters or anything and no programs running in the background....i defragged last night.....I mean what else can i do? can't be my machine if u guys can max out w/ lesser specs. Please suggest!!! thank you!

I have Windows XP installed in my computer with 256 DDR RAM and 64 MB NVIDIA GEFORCE video card...
I experience the choppiness many times but it goes away after i restart my pc over and over again until the choppiness goes away..

I have also noticed the choppiness on my machine (AMD Athlon XP 1800+,
512 mb DDR, Grforce 4 Ti 4200, SB Live, Windows 98)). I'm using the Thrustmaster Firestorm Dual Power.
After quitting the Thrustmaster scftware (Thrustmapper and Thrustmaster Folder), Windows still recognizes the Controller und the choppiness went away after starting nba 2003. I can still use both analog sticks. Hope it helps.
