So I just blew 180 bucks?!?

I just bought a Geforce4 MX 420 64 meg AGP & 256 Megs more of DDR ram.

Is there gonna be a patch for this? I dont want to upgrade, didn't want to make those purchases but I have sort of a problem with video games :lol: .

How are some win 98 users getting it to run smooth?

Unfortunately a GF4 MX is only a souped-up GF2. It doesn't have the features a true GF4 has.

I'm running win98SE and I running everything smooth with all setting to
the max. But I also have a GF4 w/128 ram and may processor is a 2.2 gigahtz w/512 ram.

If you paid 180 Dollars for that card then I suggest you return it RIGHT NOW. SERIOUSLY.

There are FAR better options available for the same price.

i run quincux AA at 1024X768 and it runs smoot to me. it also runs smooth at 1280X1024 but I like 1024X768 and quincux better.

While the GF4 MX is a value card it is the WRONG card to purchase if you are making an upgrade. It is based on outdated technology, and will perform very poorly in future games. The "GF4" part of the name is smart (and deceptive) marketing on the behalf of Nvidia.

As far as the vaule market is consverned your options should be to get:

Get A GF3 Ti200, or a Radeon 8500(LE), Radeon 9000, or a GF4 Ti 4200(64 or 128meg).

of XP. The video card has 40 bicks worth of rebate. The RAM has 20 bucks worth but at the moment its 180. So final price is 120 for both. I could waited for a PC show but wanted to play Live kinda bad. Thanks everyone for the input. If someone finds a workaround please post it.

Dude I understand your predicament, but a GF4 MX has to be the WORST upgrade choice you could possibly make.

Motown...if you live in Michigan...as I would assume from your name...have you heard of a place called Micro3000? It is a computer store in central MI. I used to go there whenI lived there. They have good prices, but then again, you could always go to CompUSA as well, which is where I got my card here in Hawaii...I got the GF4 Ti4200, and it did not cost me as much as your card. Another place you might try is pricewatch.com. Just a thought...

Also have you tried the Windows ME Nvidia driver?

CompUSA is HORRIBLE.

Last time I walked in there I laughed histerically at the 50% to 100% markups over what I could get off of Pricewatch. I only go there to watch the check out counter and laugh at soccer moms who pay $189 for 40GB 5400RPM generic hard drives. (I tried making a suggestion to a fellow customer, but CompUSA saw I knew was I was talking about, so they kicked me out .)

Argh I'm sick of people saying how crap the GF4 MX is, there is nothing wrong with it I just bought one not long ago so I could play BF1942 and it works great, it was cheap and it does the job nicely so why is it so crap?????? It all comes down ot individual gaming standards and Maximizing your setup. If you look hard enough, and spend a few extra bucks, you can find somethign FAR superior to the GF4 MX.

I laugh at folks that have 2Ghz + Processors and GF4 MX's.

I bought a MX card because I'm not spending alot on a computer piece. I have other things to use my money on.

Actually GF 4 MX 440 or 460 arent crap, good choice if you dont wanna expend more than 80-90 $ always remembering that they dont have some directx 8 capabilities

You can see not for having a bigger number the card is better

Its performs better than the Geforce 2MX and it picks up the enhancements that came with the Madden 2003 patch. The Geforce 2 MX didn't. I also see a slight improvement in Dungeon Siege as well. So after I recieve my rebates I think it'll be 50 bucks well spent.

I have a 500Mhz Celeron, 192MB of PC100, and a PCI GeForce4 MX 420 (that's somewhat "wrong" since the PCI MX 420 is only supposed to have a heatsink on the CPU, a VGA slot and clocked at like 250/133 and mine has a heatsink over the CPU and RAM, a VGA, S-Video and DVI slot and was clocked at 266/166 out of the box (300/200 now of course)) and i eaisly get playable framerates (30fps is playable) at 1024x768x16 (near max details, sometimes max) on GTAIII, Mafia, NHL 2002, Madden 2002, NBA Live 2001, THPS3 (60fps!), etc.

and it cost me just $30 (it was originally $98.96 from Wal-Mart), how about them apples?

If you think that a Max of 30 fps in 16bit colour is satisfactory then all the power to you. Personally, I would rather play on my 8bit NES than throw in any new game at those settings. Whatever makes your boat float.

interesting...the human eye can barely tell a difference between 32-bit and 16-bit...it can also tell barely any difference between 30fps and anything higher...the only reason you see any difference in frame rate is because of response time, but when response time to your input is limited by our own physical abilities the difference again, is not so noticible

Wrong. If you have Quake 3 just look at the rocket smoke in 16 and 32-bit. Huge difference.
