Very Choppy even on lowest settings need help! (Unplayable)

Fri Nov 15, 2002 11:41 am

Specs:
1.2 AMD T-Bird
256 Megs of Ram
Geforce 2MX 32 Meg of Ram
Win98

Just downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers.

I can run Madden 2003, Max Payne, Neverwinter, Dungeon Siege, IL-2, IWD2 and Freedom Force all perfectly at the max.

Anyone with similiar specs running ok? If so what did you do?

Fri Nov 15, 2002 11:52 am

I have a similar system, but a Geforce 4. It plays nicely with these settings:
Vsync: off
tripple buffer: off
filtering: anistropic
Players: max
Bench: max
Environment: medium
lighting: high
reflections: low
crowd anim: off
texture detail: max
resolution: max

and for a few extra framerates, toggle color from 32bit to 16bit (you won't notice the difference).

I've just realised that you said that the game doesn't even run on the lowest settings, so I don't know how helpful this will be. Lots of other people have had the same issues as you, but I'm not sure if anyone's found the solution. Make sure you have the latest DirectX (8.1), latest drivers (detenators etc).

Same choppyness ---even with my system....check it out

Fri Nov 15, 2002 12:12 pm

I have the same choppyness problem as mentioned above and check out my system...

P4 2.53 gig
512 meg ddr ram
Sound Blaster Audigy Platimum EX
ATI Radeon 9700
and
Windows ME

The game still runs horribly. I didn't try your recommended settings mention in the reply but with my system you would think I could put everything maxed out.
I just upgraded my system in anticipation of Live 2003 and I'm totally disapointed at how horrible this game is. I dunk every time down the court
The game is so choppy I dont' have time to look for a pass or get to rebounds or block shots.
NOt only that...(I've played half a game so far...I had to shut it off cause it was so choppy)....both me and the opposing team where shooting 80%

Fri Nov 15, 2002 12:51 pm

try winXP, damn im gonna ask forum guy to post a sticky about this :P

Fri Nov 15, 2002 1:48 pm

Win 98 is the problem. Upgrade to 2k or XP.

So I blew 180 buck?!?

Sat Nov 16, 2002 4:00 am

I just bought a Geforce4 MX 420 64 meg AGP & 256 Megs more of DDR ram.

Is there gonna be a patch for this? I dont want to upgrade, didn't want to make those purchases but I have sort of a problem with video games  .

How are some win 98 users getting it to run smooth?

Sat Nov 16, 2002 4:05 am

most users using win98 can't really get the game to run.....

I tried running on Win98, choppy like mad..... run on WinXP, smooth like mad......

Sat Nov 16, 2002 4:24 am

Make sure that you have the latest drivers for whatever
game controller that you are using. I was using an outdated
set of drivers for my contoller (which is the Thrustmaster Firestorm),
and the game ran real choppy, then I downloaded the latest
drivers and the game ran very smoothly on the highest graphic
settings. Good Luck. :)

Sat Nov 16, 2002 4:37 am

I doubt anyone using win 98 is running it smooth on 1024 or above max detail useless they have a 3 gighz machine w/ 9700pro and just upping frame rates with brute force. I bet half the people with XP who claims they are running is "smooth" is just getting it to run around 35 fps (which to me is not smooth). The coding for this game in term of graphics/video is for shitz. Come on, Live is not DOOM III. EA need to make a patch to enhance the framerates in this game for all medium to high end systems.
Hardware T & L ???

Sat Nov 16, 2002 11:59 am

OK this is BULLSHIT! We have Windows ME on one machine, and it is SOOOO not playable. I have never seen this much chop in any game on any system It's UNPLAYABLE. So your tellin' me I have to spend another $100 on XP to get this going on our 800mhz? EA better get this fixed or they are gonna get some serious heat from the 98/ME users. I'm sure they outrank the XP users in sheer numbers.

p.s. My 1 ghz XP machine runs it fine, but it's still bullshit that 98/ME users are getting screwed. Check EA's website. More and more people are bringing this issue to light. It has nothing to do with hardware or vsync settings. It's 98/ME. I'm talking CHOP. Like as in 1 fps or less.....

heads up on wingman rumblepad

Sun Nov 17, 2002 12:08 pm

My machine Windows 98 / 850 thunderbird amd ran great with a gravis aftershock, but the controller wouldn't read the 90 degree up command on the direction pad. I drove thiry miles and bought a wingman rumblepad cordless and installed it--and the game became so choppy that it was unplayable; installed the latest drivers from logitech and it was somewhat better but not playable. I wish I kept the gravis--the problem is with the drivers I'd guess. Kind of a pisser because EA recommends that pad in the manual. Not a happy camper, probably will drive again and try another gravis. Penis.

Sun Nov 17, 2002 12:42 pm

I have win98se and it runs smooth with most things maxed out. But I'm probably gonna go to XP just for a little extra performance.

P3 733mhz
600MB RAM
Geforce 4 MX440 64mb

Sun Nov 17, 2002 12:43 pm

Oh....and just adding to that, I'm not using a controller. Maybe the problem is caused by a combination of win98 and the controller. Try taking it out to test.

Sun Nov 17, 2002 7:38 pm

win xp pro
p3 933mhz
512mb sdram
gf2 mx 32mb

smooth @ 1024x768x16bit

all settings on max except shadows (low) and reflections (high). bench players off (removed).

a friend has faster machine (1.5ghz) but with win98 and has problems @ 800x600. will ea boost up the xp sales? ;)

Sun Nov 17, 2002 10:04 pm

My brother too, total choppiness 1 fps or so.
Specs

Pentium III 800
Geforce Titanium 64mb (Runs smoothly Madden 2003 1280x1024 high details)
Detonator 30.82
Windows ME

I 'm pretty sure is the OS, Please EA keep care of the big problem, a lot of People are going to get through that shortly.

Sun Nov 17, 2002 10:51 pm

athlon 1.4 ghz
asus nvidia tnt 2 32mb
seagate 40gb 7200rpm
win 98 2nd edition

the game works fine with me, the details set to the max.. Have u tried lowering the resolution. My friend got the same problem, but i told him to adjust the resolution and it works. Hope this help.

I don't know about other operating systems, but if you're running w98 I suggest sticking to gravis drivers. I removed the logitech drivers for wingman and reinstalled the gravis experience drivers (even though I took the aftershock back) and ran Live with the keyboard. Boom, the program ran fine even at high settings. No choppiness or lag at all.

Short and long of it is that Ea's suggestion to run logitech wingman rumblepad probably applies to XP machines.

Mon Nov 18, 2002 4:25 am

Once again a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. Found the cure for my problems in the post "bye bye choppiness". Go to dxdiag and turn down the sound accelleration to basic. Controller (wingman) & high detail settings work great. I was able to max out details and still the game plays smooth. Thanks for the info everyone.

dxdiag changes did the trick for me as well

Mon Nov 18, 2002 1:12 pm

I only had to turn it down to standard though. :)

Mon Nov 18, 2002 1:13 pm

it wouldn't work for me in Windows 98 either, but i went and purchased *cough* Windows XP downloaded the service packs updated my drivers and now i'm ballin on maximum every damn thing

Mon Nov 18, 2002 7:53 pm

I haven't got the game yet, but the demo runs so fast that the camera has trouble keeping up. Kidd keeps on dissin those quick passes. I'm running Win98se and I'm playing with the keyboard. I hate the pad and I'll never buy one *period*

Gonna get the game next week...

Mon Nov 18, 2002 11:15 pm

the game is choppy for me2:(
1.5 ghz
geforce2 mx
256 ram
windows me
:( :( :( :(

Tue Nov 19, 2002 3:03 am

We tried playing with no controllers attached and sound slider with no accelleration and it's still the same: CHOPPY. At the EA boards there are some members that say EA tech support knows about the 98/ME issue and is working on a fix. I sure hope so :?

Tue Nov 19, 2002 5:11 am

Athlon 1.7
GeForce2 MX 64 Mb
256 DDR
Win98SE

It runs perfect with most details set to high (not tested Max yet)

Oh I forgot to mention my PSX2USB converter which let me use the psx pad... marvellous! Not tested this "freestyle" thing.
