i know i need to brighten it but i'm the black background is the only color code i know except for white.

well in the new version of html, you can use the name of the basic color. i.e. instead of #FFFFFF (hexidecimal format) you can use black, or for blue just write blue. you can also search the web, there a many tables out there showing the hexidecimal codes.
