Considering upgrading to XP...help?

At the moment I have Win98 SE and I'm not entirely happy with the way that NBA Live 2003 works. Do you think it's a good idea for me to upgrade to XP (and get the latest service packs)? I've heard XP actually runs faster than 98, is this true? And do you think it will help me with ordinary framerates?
I'm really not sure what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

if you decide to upgrade to win xp (pro or home) you would be making the best decision for the game. these are my specs:

amd athlon 1700+
512 mb ddr ram
asus geforce 2 gts 32 mb (upgraded detonator drivers to the latest, nov. 11)
soundblaster x-gamer 5.1
thrustmaster firestorm dual power 2 (excellent controller for this game; use the drivers from the web, the win xp ones)
gamepad pro (from previous live versions)
win xp pro

get the service packs as well - just to be safe. not entirely sure if they make a whole lot of a difference, but win xp does -FOR SURE. i'm loving the game, it is not choppy at all - i thought it would be b/c of a lower end geforce, but i'm happy with it.

as for win xp, i've been running it for a little under a year, and b/c i knew the game was coming out, i did a fresh install of win xp. i can't stress enough how much quickly the game runs under xp, although i haven't tried it under win 98 or me. good luck.

So for the purposes of playing Live 2003, there's no difference between XP home and Pro. Is that right?

well i considered u to upgrade to win2kpro(service pack3) it will run smoothly like me i have expirienced choppy on winxp but when i install win2k pro with sp3 it will run smooth on my pc my spec are here.
windows2000pro(service pack3)
391MB of memory
40Gig HDD barracuda
geforce 2 mx400 64MB updated driver from nvidia website

and live2k3 is run smooth than the xppro

You should definately upgrade. Just for the fact that XP is the best o/s available.

I can't run NBA Live2003 at all...well, actually can, but it is so laggy until I couldn't play anything at all......

installed WinXP pro, and got the game to run smoothly at 1024*768 32bits

guess u must upgrade to WinXP/2K to play NBA Live2003 properly......

With that amount of RAM you should get rid of 98 as fast as possible.

There is no difference between Pro and Home as far as NBA Live is concerned, Pro just supports dual processors, remote administration etc etc...corporate stuff.

And do not get Win 2K instead of XP, XP is a far superior operating system, if you have problems with Win 2K then it is far more difficult to fix them than it is with XP.

You can do that and it will keep all your programs and setting etc. but it is going to be horribly unstable. Especially when upgrading from ME which is a steaming pile of turds.

Get the upgrade run it in windows then select a New Installation instead of an upgrade and your on your way.

i was also thinking of upgrading to win xp from win98se, but not if it will help in my situation. the game runs fine on medium detail but as the game progresses, it starts to get choppy and then it slowly gets better. i've recorded the frame rates to be around 13-20 fps. my specs are 1Ghz, 512mb ddram, 20gb HD, Sis 630/730 64mb video (shared mem). maybe the choppiness is due to the shared mem, do u think winxp will help with that? its the best my laptop can do, can't upgrade video cards on them any suggestions would help, thanks.

Your video card is the chief culprit here I'm afraid and there really isn't anything you can do about it. You might get better performance with an upgrade to XP because it addresses memory better than Win9x but you might experience poorer performance because XP has a lot of overhead.

I'ts probably not worth the money to upgrade to XP.

Just turn off all the eye candy.

With 512MB you should really use XP.
