How do you Direct Pass with a Sidewinder in the PC version?

I just played a game where I had a lot of turnovers because I was just using the d-pad and not direct pass, but I can't figure out how it works. I know that you press a certain button and then another button for the player but where does it tell you which player would be represented by which button?

It just seems a pain to hold the d-pad down in the direction you're going and still press two other buttons to pass. Is it really that confusing to do on a Sidewinder?

press Direct Pass
under each player it will then say a corresponding button

i know that when you bring the ball up w/ a PG, DPass + Crossover will get it to your PF

How can the d-pad help determine anything when you always have to be pushing the d-pad to move your player?
