Live needs CPU strategy!

Sun Jun 06, 2004 5:05 am

As we have seen in the playoffs and throughout the season, few teams run quick freelance offenses. Live needs to have a system that utilizes star players to create double teams and pass the ball for midrange jumpers. There are many ways Live could correct this and I won't get into them now but this is the number one problem that needs to be addressed for me. Live 2000 did an awsome job with double teams and rotations and the like....I think this could all be covered if I had my wish!

If i had my wish I would add a coach feature that would do these things
1) Playbooks....4 or 5 different sets with a couple plays in each set that the computer mixes up throughout the game. If a high wing pick n roll is working they should go back to it quite a bit and if the post is working the should utilize that....also set plays that utilize jump shooters off screens like Rip Hamilton....Also certain teams balance the floor different....alot of teams have the PG enter the ball to the post on the strong side but some teams like Dallas with Antoine Walker(he did this more in Boston with Pierce) will have a PF or good three point shooter enter the ball to make the strong side D stay on their man to open up shots for the post

2) Matchups....Live has the built in capacity to double team, and change the defense intensity....when guarding Scot Pollard they should not double team EVER! but when gaurding Shaq a double team better be coming quick! I would love to see actual matchups and the computer change its defensive intensity and double team script based on individuals...for instance Micheal Curry starts at small forward and his script should be set for no double team, low intensity but if someone like Morris Peterson subs for him you need to guard him so the intensity would go up to medium or high, and maybe a post double team......I always play with a team full of created players and I would hope they could do this with attributes(high scoring and offensive awareness would yield higher defense pressure from the opponents and such)

3) Coaching strategy.....how much does a team double? Some teams front the post others play back and send a double team after the first dribble....some hedge the pick n roll others play it straight.....How much does a team run the fast break or slow it down(Kings vs Pacers).....all things that should be under the coaches option and controlled by the USER in franchise mode

4) Substitutions....There has got to be a way to have better CPU subs.....Certain players only play so many minutes a game...like John Stockton in the late 90's getting the mandatory rest at 5:00 in the first quarter and only playing around 30 minutes a game....This should be set for each player...depending on foul trouble and how well they play it may change game to game which would be awsome. This would have a much better impact on stat generation and the importance of a balanced roster in franchise mode.....the current system is terrible and has been since the begining....(I play 12 minute quarters always so to see an inept Travis Knight playing 39 minutes I just cringe....or seeing Stephon Marbury subed out of a 98-95 game with 2:00 left in the 4th quarter)

All and all I would like to see Live get on the same level as Madden with the strategy of the franchise mode and individual games....To me these are essential...much more so than adding Slam dunk contests or All star weekend stuff.....I want to see some gameplay improvement before they add more features.

Just my take on what I would like to be fixed for 2005

FYI Nba 2k3 has ALL of what you said!

That's the problem, 2k3, they hade to screw up 2k4, but I've also had this Idea and it would be great, I'd like the AI to take advantage of mis-matches. A guy like Nene who is quick would try to beat other PF's off the dribble.
If you sub Jonathan Bender in he would try to shoot over his defender or take them in the post. If you're playing Philly and they don't switch Snow to the SG then you'd try to take AI in the post etc etc etc...

I agree. I'd love to see the CPU alter its strategy from game to game, especially in the playoffs. Not only would it be more realistic, it would keep the game challenging without being frustrating.

I saw glimpses of the CPU altering its strategy in NBA Live 2004, or at least what I thought was the CPU altering its strategy. During the 2004 Finals in my Bulls Dynasty, the Kings went to Peja for the first three games, but down 0-3 in Game 4, Chris Webber seemed to be getting a lot of touches in the first quarter. He ened up scoring 17 points in the period. It might have been a coincidence though, as he wouldn't score again and Peja took most of the shots the rest of the way.
