Forced to use Medium Texture Settings? Solved

Postby JaoSming on Wed Apr 04, 2012 2:05 am

Installed 2004, and have been dealing with a crappy issue. The game is forcing me to use low or medium texture quality settings.

I've tried using an old settings file, messing with console commands, using 3D Analyzer, compatibility modes, all of it and nothing seems to work.

Using the EZ program in the support folder, I can see my available memory fluctuate with the different compatibility modes, but none unlock the high texture settings in the actual game.

Making things more confusing, that EZ program is claiming my 8800GT is the primary video card, when it is in the sli slot and my 560Ti is in the primary. It remains that way even if I disable it in the device manager.

So yea, has anyone dealt with this before with 2004?

64-bit Win 7

oh yea, and the vanilla game will not let me change the in-game resolution either.
Opinions are my own.

Weird stuff. In 3d analyzer, did you force a different video card id? Have you tried disabling extra cpu cores?

You can always mod the game and replace threw low quality textured with high quality ones.

I have not tried the extra cores disabling, simply cause it is finding the cpu, just not the card or ram information

2004 only has one set of textures, but the quality setting tells which mip map the game uses, I'm guessing.

I realize I'm coming from 4 years of HD 2K games, to 2004 which uses 512x512 textures for the entire uniform (so really 512x256 for each part) but the quality just seems more terrible than it needs to be. In-game vs texture scaled up

So I was trying to figure out which pre-fshx program lets me have custom sized textures in fsh files, and I found this....here.....some Guru I am

youvalss wrote:I may have found the answer. Instead of going to the settings folder, go to the cscripts folder. There should be 2 files there. Open them with notepad and see that one of them (I think it's hwconfig) contains the resolution and other settings. You can edit it. But one thing I found out, was that after editing the file, the game ran at higher resolution, BUT once I edited the details in the game - the resolution went back to low resolution. So edit only these files - without editing that in the game.
Good luck!

Actually, it is feconfig file, but nevertheless, it works! yay! And I no longer have to map the 1600x1200 resolution to the 'P' key since those files control res too

God I love 2004 and it's dev console goodness.

Will this game work with a AMD quad-core and a 2gb radeon card with windows 8??
I've attempted to edit the files suggested above and the game absolutely refuses to change them.
When I go back to the files after playing for a bit, it still shows my changes, but it's as if the game is ignoring what I've entered??

Should I attempt to use 3d Analyzer??

I'm absolutely desperate to get this game to work as I DETEST the gameplay for the newer 2k games.

I can't vouch for Windows 8, but it does work with Windows 7 (64 bit), so there's a pretty good chance.
