Player lock ... how to stop the sim to sub in?

Anyone know if there's any way to control the auto sub in when my lock player is on the bench. If I can keep my lock player on the bench then it's practically coach mode. I've tried auto/manual sub, even tried the workaround for coach mode but no luck.
