Race Driver: GRiD

Fri May 09, 2008 2:41 am

Demo is up for PS3 and the 360 versions, PC demo was delayed I guess but has anyone else tried it?

IMO, this is already one of my favorite racing games.

Fri May 09, 2008 10:58 am

I saw an ad for the demo in the XBL Marketplace, haven't tried it yet but might give it a look.

Fri May 16, 2008 5:22 pm

Played the demo yesterday.
Wonderful presentaion and graphics, but it's a bit too realistic for my taste. One small crash on the wrong place of your car and you're unable to steer right any longer, for example.
But I like how my co driver speaks to me with my first name :proud:

I finally got around to trying out the demo. I wish the steering and cameras in GTA IV were more like that. The realism takes a bit of getting used to but I think it's balanced out nicely by the "flashback" feature in the instant replay which is quite innovative. Not sure if I'll pick it up because I'm not really into racing games these days (I've played the latest NFS games but didn't much care for them) but based on the demo I'd consider it.

Thu May 22, 2008 2:06 am

Downloaded, played it on PS3 few days ago, really enjoyed it. I love the idea and execution of "flashback". Online was great as well, runs awesome, a pity that we can't say the same about 2k8, where online lag is really killing the experience. Anyway, the demo is great!

I wonder if it'll have offline multi-player. I really want to get a good racing game, that I could play on split-screen with my buddies at home as well.

Thu May 22, 2008 6:31 am

Not that Wikipedia is always an accurate source, but its entry currently lists single player, multiplayer and online under game modes. It would be a strange choice not to include an offline multiplayer mode, though I suppose with the popularity and importance placed upon online play these days you never know if the offline play will suffer or in some way be limited.

quiet an early review, but w.e

BTW: Ran the Demo on my new computer and yea, Im now getting it for the PC instead now.

Fri May 23, 2008 3:34 pm

Pretty good review, fairly positive. I'm surprised that the Flashback feature was almost referred to as an afterthought though, that was one of the things that I most liked about the demo. Obviously the challenge is to avoid using them and play in Pro mode where they cannot be used at all but while you're still mastering the game while tackling the main season/competition mode at the same time.

I'm not bothered by the prospect of not having much customisation options in the garage but a hardcore fan of the genre or motor sports in general would no doubt miss that level of detail. When it comes to those games, I just like to get straight into the game and race without having to worry about anything else. Not that I'll be rushing out to get it but maybe after it's been out for a while and come down in price I'll think about picking it up.

Fri May 23, 2008 4:30 pm

A curiosity question: would it be better as a PC game than rFactor?

Because I might have to pick between the two then.

Fri May 23, 2008 8:23 pm

well it isnt going to be as customizable as rFactor, that is for sure, but I still think this is the most fun I've had playing a "simulation" racing game ever so like Andrew the lack of customization is fine with me

Thu May 29, 2008 12:27 am

I wouldn't call Grid quite a simulation game...Forza or GranTurismo is simulation.

Thu May 29, 2008 5:57 am

I'd describe the gameplay as a mix of simulation and arcade, which makes for a pretty good racing game in my opinion. In terms of car customisation it's far from being a sim though but as I said that doesn't bother me.

Fri May 30, 2008 3:56 am

I couldn't agree with you more Andrew. I was just noting to Jao, that Grid is not a true simulation game in case he hasn't played some.

Fri May 30, 2008 5:21 am

I've played sims before and I just cant get into it. I understand that Grid ain't a sim but at the same time it isnt really arcadey either. Ride the line between sim and arcade and imo it makes a really fun game.

Fri May 30, 2008 3:05 pm

I don't mind depth in racing games per se, two of my favourite games back in the day used to be the original MicroProse Grand Prix and Indianapolis 500: The Simulation which offered a modest amount of customisation that was worth looking into it if you really wanted to but they were still games you could just install and jump straight into a race. I was also a huge fan of the original Need for Speed which didn't offer any customisation at all (that I can recall).

Fri May 30, 2008 3:18 pm

I have already played this game already and all i can say is that this game is good especially when you play this on a high end PC or in a loptop (Actually im playing it with my laptop)

Sat May 31, 2008 3:02 am

I hear you guys. And, I agree that the mechanics of the driving experience is great. But, I do feel that customization adds some depth to the game so as of now, Im still deciding whether or not I will pick the game up or just rent it.

Sat May 31, 2008 3:45 am

My girl found a PC copy at a mall this morning. Evidently that Target can't figure out the differences between European and US release dates.

Played 2 races during lunch after the install. 1 open wheel and 1 demolition derby (crossing track with the jump). Open wheel cars are freakin insane, I couldnt get the handling down on them so of course I just went around the wrong way and crashed :D
The demolition derby track was pretty cool. Im pretty sure the cars were 4WD and they got loose in the corners pretty easily. I was in first for most of the race but on the 5th lap I landed on another car on the jump and flipped a couple times (from in-car view, fecking awesome). Ended up in 5th I think, but def worth the 40 bucks for the PC version.

I can't wait to start the career when I get out today.

Can someone give the System Requerments of the game (PC version) Coz my PC is very limited :-x :-x

Even though I think you suck, based on the video (no offense), nice video and pics you posted. :P

I love that track where one section is a ramp. Crazy flying cars.

Sun Jun 01, 2008 7:59 am

Oh shut it my bitch lover :hump:

Yea those were my first three races (besides the tutorial), and the first two clips were from the first turn, lol. Great way to start the game.

I'm doing the difficulty just above Normal, I think it's called Serious. Winning about half the races but this game is just continuing to amaze me.

The 24 Hour (12 minute I think) Le-Mans race you do after each season is kind of boring but the day night cycle is better than I thought it would be. I have a teammate in career now who freaks me the hell out cause every time he gets behind me ( :hump: ) he goes "Helloooooo, Ia seee youu" in his Japanese accent. But Eh, he is really good at the drifting events were I fail.

The japanese events are the most original so far. Drifting, downhill drifting, this weird race where its 1v1 on a mountain pass and if you are behind the other guy you get penalized for hittting him, and street races around some shipyard.

Making money is a little too easy once you beat your objectives in the Le-Mans races for other teams, you get something like a quarter million if you meet those.

Screenie time.

You obviously haven't seen that piece of documentary film on automotive history of drifting titled Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift.
