Nice find from reddit:

Twice last night I had an instance where the ball was going into the hoop, and it "popped" up in the air (an extra bounce on the rim). It was really strange looking. Picture the ball being almost in a stationary position slowly falling into the hoop, and it just suddenly pops up in the air. One time it went in, the other time it popped out.

Holy crap. I wonder if that is some kind of physics glitch because once it hit's the rim, it obviously should behave like a live ball. I wonder if the rebounding logic had anything to do with it being pulled off the rim like that right into a player's hand.

Ugh, stuff like that is extremely frustrating, and makes the game feel canned. I think we sometimes throw that word (and "predetermined") around a bit too much, but there are definitely moments like that where things don't feel like they're on the level.

To be fair when he shot the ball the computer may have ran the numbers or whatever and determined it was a miss and the animation is just terrible. I don't think the ball operates on a 100% physics based system.. unless im wrong. The game knows whether or not the ball is going in as soon as it is released.
