Some new details on MyLEAGUE/MyGM (Forbes)

Just a couple more tidbits: 'NBA 2K17': New Details On MyGM And MyLeague Modes Arise

After every season in MyGM and MyLeague, the rules committee will meet to determine if there will be any changes.

It takes a certain percentage of approval from the league’s owners to pass a rule. According to Erick Boenisch, the mode’s executive producer told me you can’t turn off the rule change process, but you can override any of the decisions you don’t like in MyLeague.

If you don’t like a passed rule, you just make it unapproved and vice versa.

I asked him about rule changes related to a shorter or longer shot clock. Boensich said there are changes related to the shot clock, but he didn’t go into specifics.

I also asked about a rule change that could potentially bring in a four-point shot. This is something that has been discussed in the real NBA.

Boenisch said it was “investigated heavily” but implementing a rule like that would have called for an immeasurable amount of work for playcalling, tendencies and behaviors, which makes sense.

Also, the names of the pre-made expansion team options, which come complete with audio and art assets:

  • Nashville Stars
  • Pittsburgh Force
  • Kansas City Knights
  • Virginia Storm
  • Vancouver Ravens
  • San Diego Surf
  • Cincinnati Lions
  • Baltimore Barons
  • Louisville Liberty
  • St. Louis Sound

I live in Nashville so this will be a must have team for me. Especially since they already have the audio.

Also just visited St. Louis the past few days, another good city for a sports franchise.

Why aren't there the Seattle Supersonics. That doesn't look good as we might need to do some research on the audio

I'd suggest that all the pre-made expansion teams needed to be fictional, as per the wishes of the NBA.

And the fact that Seattle SuperSonics as a brand is already in the game. Maybe choosing Seattle as an expansion franchise will automatically be tied with the SuperSonics?

I'm a little worried about MyLEAGUE this year. All the features they've mentioned are things i don't really care about. Rule changes. Expansion teams. Protected picks. They're all fine features, but if the core game is just the same then i'll be disappointed. I haven't seen anything written about improvements to player progression/regression algorithms, generated player AI, 'making history' integration, player 'form' algorithms, more detailed prospect scouting, synergistic team chemistry, smarter training development, more in-depth coaching philosophies, player personalities, etc. :(

This.

I mainly play MyGm and obviously I'd prefer the attention to be spent on that mode instead of career mode which just feels like Sims NBA to me.

I'm sure I'll get the game, I usually skip a year in between but I'm ready to move to the PS4 now.

I wish MyGM gave me a real sense of difference in the league. A Spurs organization is different from a Sixers organization, I want that feeling to be translated somehow. Why would players sign with us? What's our legacy in the league? What does the future hold? Stuff like that is hard to implement, I guess. Also, year after year you've got guys like Pau Gasol signing with the Sixers because they have the most cap while also having Embiid/Okafor/Noel. Obviously there are guys that want a boatload of cash but there are players like West who just want a ring no matter what.

I wish we heard a bit more about that kind of stuff opposed to the superficial "once in a while" type of things like protected picks and rule changes (usually off-season stuff)...what about the season itself?

Well major cities already have their city name audio starting in 2K13

Excellent observation. If 2K made changes to the core of MyLeague/MyGM, I think we would know about it by now. I expect the same player progression/regression algorithms, generated player AI, etc. For this reason I plan to carry on with my 2K16 MyGM (Spurs), but play 2K17 MyLeague with a fantasy draft and complete custom league. It's the customization and expansion option that makes it worthwhile for me, but I go into it with the expectation that the core elements of those two modes will remain the same.

In all fairness, "we tweaked the AI" probably doesn't come across as the most compelling or attention-grabbing selling point, and is just as likely to be written off as buzzwords and shallow lip-service. Having said that, it is usually one of the things that's mentioned in a deep-dive developer blog by now, so unless another one on MyLEAGUE/MyGM is coming, it doesn't seem like it was an area of focus this year.
