What kind of story are you expecting in MyCAREER?

Tue Aug 09, 2016 10:12 pm

As per the topic title: what kind of story are you expecting - or for that matter, wanting - to see in NBA 2K17's MyCAREER?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'd prefer no story at all, or the ability to opt for a more traditional start to MyCAREER if you don't want to have anything to do with the story. NBA 2K16's MyCAREER expanded the experience nicely, but you've got to slog through the story to get to Year 2 and see it all. I'd love to have two separate modes, like they've done with MyGM and MyLEAGUE, that offer the two different types of career mode experience.

However, since that seems unlikely - and even if they were to do that, I'd probably at least give a story-driven mode a look, just to see what it was like - my preference would be a story that finishes with you getting drafted, or very early on in your rookie year. I'd like to be able to play the whole rookie season and shoot for Rookie of the Year, with more than eight games to do it. I'd like a story that fits any character that you create, and not one where you stick out like a sore thumb if you don't happen to match the character the story specifically has in mind. I'd like to have some control over my characterisation and interaction with other people in the story, with choices that matter and affect your career path. I'd like a story that isn't too corny, trite, or cliche, with predictable melodrama. I'd like a mode that knows whether or not it's an RPG that allows you to put yourself in the game, and that has a better ratio of gameplay to story/cutscenes than NBA 2K16 did.

When it comes down to it, I'd like to be able to tell the story myself, and have control over it. Last year's hashtag, #BeTheStory? The whole "No one's going to tell my story but me" in the intro of NBA 2K14's MyCAREER? I'd actually like that to be the case, rather than feeling I'm on rails in between gameplay.

I commented on a Reddit post last week on what a perfect MyCareer should be and I got fair amount of upvotes. Thought I should share it here:

The perfect MyCareer would be a not so cheesy story (2K14 MyCareer) and a story that didn't force things. (Forcing me to be not able to play all my first season, Interviews, Injuries etc.)
Everything should happen randomly for each player, I shouldn't be able to look at someones MyCareer on Youtube and find that their journey was literally the exact same as mine, same cutscenes, same interviews, things like that.
ALSO, give us the ability to chose if we want to be an all out superstar, or just a scrapper like Dennis Rodman who chooses not to score and focus on defense/rebounds. I hate how you get into the league and within a couple of games you're already being matched with LeBron, there is no challenge. Bring us back to how they did it in NBA 2K11, start off at like 40 overall, go through a Draft Combine, Summer League, D-League etc. Give us the ability to actually fight for a spot on a team, stop locking us at 12 minutes and build ourselves up from there. Depending on how we do in those respective stages should decide or role on the team, whether it's a benchwarmer, starter or a D-League player. That's the perfect MyCareer (also International play would be cool too)

EDIT: They should bring back individual attributes upgrades so I can make my own player unique from others and also so I make a player who doesn't have to be a superstar (Dennis Rodman)

I love this idea! Hope 2K does too.

I'm definitely in favour of that idea, too. That's why I'd like to have branching story options, if there's going to be an overarching narrative. As you said, everyone basically has the same experience, which I believe goes against the RPG/"tell your own story" aspect of the mode.

That said, I'd rather not start out at 40 Overall, especially if they're going to stick with the notion that you're a highly touted prospect. Some players obviously are NBA ready, so it should be possible to find success early on. If there is a story and you are meant to be a big deal, I'd actually advocate starting out in the 70s; since your MyPLAYER is also used for MyPARK and 2K Pro-Am, I think this would also be fairer and better for balance in those modes, for those who don't want to immediately pay their way to the high 80s, and need to grind up. That said, I do like the idea of having different career paths, and the option of being a role player. 40 Overall might still be a bit harsh, though. ;)

Well then they should create a system where you can chose what type of player you are. I don't know if Madden still has this but I remember they had a system which allowed you to chose where you came in the draft. Instead of choosing where you come in the draft, you get to chose if you're a high draft prospect or a low draft prospect. This of course decides your starting overall. If you're a lottery pick, you start off at 70 overall. If you're a mid draft pick, you start off at 60 overall etc.

Of course the time you spend in college/draft combine/summer league allows you to build up your player to a higher overall and decides your draft pick. BTW, I think they should completely scrap High School. It adds nothing but a story aspect and was actually kind of boring to get through, especially when you're playing for high schools that are fictional and you can't skip those annoying cutscenes of Vic being a pervert.

i wish they let us play with young kobe, carter, tmac , mj, shaq and the rest players with their animations , playing style, dunks(which would be obtain after getting higher dunking rate) , but like 70 rating

I'd like to play in a league with CPU teams that have superstars that take over games.

Get rid of having to play a guy with a bad attitude.

I think your ratings (and thus Overall) should be more or less in line with real rookies. That's why I'd suggest 40 Overall is too low; anyone rated that low is probably not ever going to amount to much in the NBA. Perhaps a select few might, but if you look at the real players who are rated really, really low in basketball video games, they're usually guys who didn't have much more than a cup of coffee in the league. I guess that's a viable career path to represent, but it'd also make for a pretty short game, without much gameplay. ;)

I like the idea of being able to choose different paths at the beginning, though. As I said though, the fact that your MyPLAYER is used across three different modes, so that needs to be taken into account.

I think Creating a Legend from last gen would find an audience today, especially if players could start out with their rookie ratings. If nothing else, it'd be fun to use real players in a career mode setting again, or perhaps a created player, if it allowed you to avoid the story of MyCAREER.

A 2K14 next gen like MyCareer that gives us random scenarios with few cut scenes and a very fair draft system not effected by performance rather the style the player plays in the game from the controller

Why wouldn't/shouldn't draft position be affected by performance?

A stat line doesn't mean star or something (one game)

Re: What kind of story are you expecting in MyCAREER?

Neither does playing style. Performances in the NCAA tournament, pre-Draft workouts, and so on do go a long way in raising and lowering a player's Draft stock, so it makes sense to represent that somehow in MyCAREER.

Well its gotta be nicer, I am really bad and I did horrible getting the lowest F possible in 2K12 and I got drafted 18th overall, and I get a C- due to poor frame rate and I go 27th. I prefer the 2K12 rating except you can't really get picked 1st

I agree that the grading logic needs to be fixed. The biggest problem there, in my opinion, is that it's still skewed towards punishing mistakes than rewarding good play, or grading the overall performance.

Am I crazy for expecting the Olympics to be integrated into MyCareer (and maybe even MyGM and MyPlayer, although I'm not as optimistic)? By integrated I mean our MyPlayer will be able to play for Team USA in 2016 (just out of college - think Laettner), then 2020, 2024 and beyond?

I hadn't thought of that, but that's a pretty good prediction, I reckon. Might as well make extensive use of the license.

Couldn't be much worse than the He Got Game ripoff we got this year

Re: What kind of story are you expecting in MyCAREER?

I don't know about that. Combine the unlikeable character you were forced to be in NBA 2K15 with the cliched recycled story of NBA 2K16, and it could be worse. As frustratingly naive as Frequency Vibrations was, at least he wasn't a narcissistic jerk.

I want a fifa-like player career mode option. To select an actual player from the league and go on from there.

I'd like the full package. A year in college, leading to the possible championship. Pre-draft workouts, draft combine, ... after the draft summer circuit to even get the spot on the roster.

As far as story goes, I'd like to see an option at the start of MyCareer to disable the story - just have a press conference from time to time etc. It would definitely be great for second player for example. And for the actual story - ideally it should be branching, where decisions really matter.

I think they might streamline MyCareer this year with less cutscenes and stories after the backlash from Spike Lee's story in 2k16.

I just hope 2K won't force us to be from USA like in 2K16. And lets create players from Europe, like Lithuania where i am.

I'd also prefer to create my own background for my MyPLAYER. A choice of accents for cutscenes/press conferences is probably highly unlikely to say the least, but that's something I can just gloss over.

Leftos has the Greek accent covered if they ever do.
