Passing sucks in this game

Fri Sep 23, 2016 2:05 pm

I get that they're trying to "tune up the defense" but I think it's ridiculous that big men are jumping in front of my passes and ripping every other pass. Combine that with the ridiculous bumping defense my defender is playing on me and I'm absolutely helpless out there. Does this get any better when your passing rating goes up? Mine is at 73 right now. I've never had such a hard time with a bball game except once when NBA Live tried to enact this bounce animation to "improve the defense. " It just sucks. Every single thing I'm doing well is negated massively by turnovers. It doesn't help that a turnover is about equal to 5 assists in player grade.

Some of the lofty passes are definitely annoying. I think my biggest gripe is probably that the directional passing still feels off. I know that icon passing is the way to go when you want to be precise about the recipient, and I do use it a lot, but sometimes you want to make a quick pass, or throw a specific pass, in which case you're relying on the direction of the left stick to select the appropriate teammate. There are times when I'm holding the left stick towards the player I want to pass to, and it'll pass in the complete opposite direction. It's a bit better than last year, but still a bit wonky.

BTW I saw "Passing choosing" or something like that settings in Controller settings yesterday evening. There you can set up how the game will chose who to pass depending of openness of player or stick direction if I get it correctly. Can someone who plays with PG\SG check this out. Maybe this is solution? I'm playing with C now so passing to different direction is a pretty rare thing for me.

Ah, I'd overlooked that. There are indeed sliders to determine the frequency of that. Well spotted, definitely worth playing around with.

As far as steals/intercepts, it really feels like in the true NBA, that these floaty / easily-interceptible passes just don't happen. NBA Players simply pass better. We as users can see the passing angle, but the AI just doesn't...

Re: directional passing etc, I feel that everyone has a different "natural" north(up)-south(down) motion when playing the game. This will often depend on a few things including controller type, hand-size and by extension - muscle-memory from many years of using shot stick in previous games.

I realise in the past I whinge about direction passing, but the fact is, my natural south (down) move is a bit to the right and well, my targeting is off.

It would be good if 2K added a customisation that lets you do a quick calibration from the get-go where you set your North(Up) / South (Down) on the right stick and goes from there. Obviously the new shooting aim would also be impacted/improved.

True, but when you're holding the stick hard right and it passes to a player next to you on the left, something is definitely amiss there.

Yes! It's not just me. To 2k's credit, they give you weightings for Direction, Distance, How open. Maybe my settings are wacky, (80,0,0) but 2k17 direction passing for me is definitely way off vs 2k16. In 2k16, the intended recipient would get the ball 90% of the time. In 2k17, it's around 70%. If anyone has good pass settings to share, I'd be very grateful.

I noticed playing the prelude that it was a bit harder to not pass the ball to the other team

I haven't tried messing around with those settings yet, but it's definitely worth a try.

With my playmaker sg at 80-something passing ratings, and the pass weight controls all at 0, the issue is less substantial to me. The other day I had 9 turnovers, looked at my settings and noticed it reset to default. I set them back to 0 and stopped turning it over so much.

I posted this in another discussion, but I'm really annoyed at the game reverting to default settings. It happens once every 5 games or so for no reason at all.

Its not only just the passing stick, the AI does some stupid stuff.

I got double teamed at the top of the arc and had my PF about 10ft away (in typical idiotic NBA 2k fashion hes standing next to my SG and both are now covered by one defender) and so i dribble out of the double team and have a direct angle to pass. It should have been as easy direct chest pass instead my PG lobs up this pass trying to lead my PF to the rim (no clue why) and throws it directly into the hands of the only defender in that freaking time zone.
And my pg has 99 passing accuracy and every other stat.
And yes this has happened far more then just once about 1-2 times per game. WHY ARE YOU LEADING ANYONE ANYWHERE WHEN THERE JUST STANDING THERE. I could understand if my PF was slashing to the rim and i passed but he was just standing there half asleep about 5ft behind the arc.

And why are C's and PF's that aren't 3 point shot threats, always hanging around the 3 point line?

Right? I call for a pick and roll, get double teamed, and the roll man just stands there. I end up yelling at my monitor, "What part of roll don't you understand? Go, motherfucker, goooo!"

Update on my pass target settings. Setting everything to 0 is not a great idea. I put distance at 0, direction and openness at 70. Still a work in progress.

Catching passes on the run seems like a bit of a problem at the moment as well. Aside from the traditional issue of getting stuck in an animation, sometimes the recipient stops dead in their tracks for no good reason, doing the defense's work for them by shutting down the fast break.

I played around with the sliders i set openness to 100 and direction to 100 it helps ensure at least my passes are picked off in ridiculous manner less often.

Cool, I'll try that. although having the ratings both at 100 make no sense mathematically. That'd make them 50-50 right? Half the weighting is on openness and half on direction, haha.

There are times also that my passes end up as lead passes. Can it be done intentionally, and if so, what button?

I accept that I make bad passes quite often, but I hate it when my teammate is seemingly open in the paint only to have his defender (usually a slow PF or Center) jump the lane at lightning speed to snatch it.

This.

We had the same problem last year too.

Patch #1 Notes

"Reduced the frequency of lob passes and increased pass speeds across the board."

Hopefully, this fixes all my complaints on passing.

Passing does seem quicker but the lob/loft pass is still there though.

Re: Passing sucks in this game

**^$#! 7 freaking turnovers in 13 minutes. Every other stinking pass a 5 mile per hour lob pass. Absolutely retarded. This patch better fix this problem. It's downright impossible to play as a PG in Mycareer at the beginning when you're rated 66 or under. I can barely eek out a B- grade in PRO. Getting 200 vc per game. F*ck this bs.

Edit: Being stuck in the paint is absolute nonsense too. I get called for that once every game. I count 1 second, 2 seconds, try to extricate myself from my defender only to find myself glued to him. He's either fighting me like hell or I'm in a post animation that refuses to let me out. 2k devs, listen. If I am turboing out of the paint in a direction away from my defender, freaking let me! This was not a problem in 2k16 or wk15, why are we fixing what isn't broken??? The passing in 2k16 wasn't broken like this either.

Is the alley oop AI messed up in 2k17? I have maxed out playmaking ability (no lob badge) but twice in a mycareer game, when I had a two on one fast break, I threw pathetic lob passes that ended at the 3 pt line to no one in particular. WTF??? This was never a problem in 2k16. The intended player may not catch it, but it wasn't 5 miles away from him to who knows who?

I've had a couple go to the wrong player before. One of them went backwards towards the 3 point line. Another cross court to nobody that I recovered and got called for a travel. I checked my controller settings and noticed they reset again. I hold two of the top single game turnover records for the Bucks. That seems to be an indicator that the settings reset. If it happens a third time, I'll know for sure.
