Hello everyone and welcome. This post is about a week late but its something I do think is important and worth your time. So on with it. I know people enjoy playing NBA 2K on PC , NLSC is proof of that. So whats the big idea then? I've seen people, a few here, mostly on reddit, discussing where, how and when to acquire the game. All to often I"ve seen 'cdkey' type sites come up, sites like G2A. This is not good. Sites like these are, at beast, shady. The idea that goes into them is pretty simple and straightforward, so whats the problem then?
Developers often do not get any of the proceeds from games sold on these sites. Often, the keys are obtained using stolen payment information. This leads to charge backs of course, meaning none of the money gets to the creators of the game. This isn't a PC only problem, but it seems to be more prevalent and easier to get away with on our platform. I"d like to direct to an article written by the CEO of TinyBuild Games that discusses this in far more detail than I ever could.
So why don't they just revoke the fraudulent keys? Ubi-Soft did that with Far Cry 4 a while back. Their was a noticeable outcry and in the end they took a reputation hit from their customers, a hit that they could little afford at the time. Of course sometimes they actually do and it seems to vary not only from publisher to publisher but also from title to title.
What does this mean for us? To me its pretty clear that the bread & butter of the sales from 2K is on consoles. I"m not saying they do not make any profit from PC, I'm sure they make enough to continue porting the game to PC, especially with the current generation console architecture being what it is. However that will not be the case if the customer base on PC keeps buying fraudulent keys. We've already experienced being snubbed by 2K on some things such as not getting the 2K14 next gen version, not getting the college dlc this year and of course being excluded from the 2K16 road the finals competition.
The game is expensive, I get it. Its not easy paying full price when you don't have much money. But there are solutions, legitimate 3rd party key sellers are out there. GameDeals is a great to place to start. Keep an eye out for 2K publisher sales in particular. Their also pretty good at announcing when a particular seller has a site wide ##% off sale. My second go to resource for non-retail priced games is CheapShark. Not only can your search for particular games here from an aggregate of retailers but you can also sign up for price alerts and see all time lows (without coupon codes). I know it can be hard, but its worth making sure the developers of the game get their share as well to show support to the publisher and let them know we want them to continue porting to PC.
Whether its this year or next year's purchase, please remember that 2K can and will pull the plug on us if they feel like its not worth it any more. If we're not worth it anymore. I don't mean to preach, and I'm certainly not trying to tell you what to do but I do want you to be educated.
Thank You,
A concerned fan.
