Photography Thread

Postby Christian. on Wed Apr 13, 2011 10:21 pm

I've been into this hobby since December 2010, but unfortunately my very first DSLR was stolen during my post-Christmas vacation. I've already purchased a replacement which is an entry level DSLR, a Nikon D3100 with a 18-55mm kit lens. Honestly, I'm still quite having a difficulty setting up my camera to produce a great photo.

If anyone is interested, you may post your photos here (it doesn't matter if you captured it using a mobile phone camera, or a point and shoot camera/digicam). You may also include the settings if you want. Thanks.

That's funny because I was about to bump the thread I created in the Photoshop forum today
viewtopic.php?f=53&t=74313

But F that thing, General Talk is better.

From that thread,

and then I took these last night (the river is flooding right now)

Those above were taken with a Sony Cybershot W120 with no tripod. ISO of 100 and everything else is default, no photoshops.

Same camera. I don't have a lot of other "artistic" shots, and I got very distracted from photography when I got my high speed camera. But after last night I'm sure I'll be taking more pics this summer.
Opinions are my own.

can only quote what I said in Jao's thread a while back, haven't really been taken many photos since then, still don't have a good camera. :/

Definitely a fan of the photography, I have some pictures in my dA gallery (link's in my sig).
Really wish I had a good camera though.

Cool shots Jao, especially the first one. I really like those nature themed photos.

Thanks for sharing.

@buzzy, you may want to invest in a good cheap entry level DSLR body, a Nikon D3100 or the recently released Nikon D5100 will do, plus a good lens.

Awesome shots guys. (Y) Unfortunately I lack the artistic ability and quality camera to contribute anything worthwhile myself.

I was just gonna add: i've seen some amazing shots done with cellphones/point and shoots. I feel like some photography is about the right place/time/angle (and the eye to know a picture needs to be taken) as much as the awesome camera.

This.

While I'd like to take on photography, having people as subjects (friends for example) proves to be a downer for me as they always cover their faces when I'm taking photos. They probably know of the Super Secret Exclusive Section.

@ Jao. My sister, who took these engagement pics https://www.facebook.com/media/set/fbx/ ... 1381211511, says that your first and last pics are the best on the page.

@christian. My sister says it appears you have been studying the rule of thirds. She also states the pic with the young lady would have been better if you had her as the center and not the bike. ie don't place her behind the seat of the bike. She also brought up the idea you need to watch your posts/trees/poles coming out of peoples heads, they can ruin a pic.

I took a photography class many years ago. I would love to get back into it.

I fucking LOVE macro......seriously, I do.

Kathryn has a Rebel XT with a Macro attachment but I have yet to take a "good" picture with it yet.

Not an avid photographer, but here are some photos taken with my phone last month in Austria (considering this, they ended up pretty good for a phone, although nothing close to slr cameras).

I'm not a particularly good photographer, but I was trying out some effects on my camera and came up with this blue hue, which I thought looked pretty cool in the picture below, it makes that dead tree look like an open hand or something. It's from the top of the Sandia Peak in Albuquerque, NM (10,000+ feet):

Same here. Unfortunately, I can't afford afford a macro lens, but a friend of mine told me that I can use my 18-55mm kit lens as a macro by reversing the mount of the lens and the ring, something like that.

I guess I might share something after all. As I mentioned in the general chat thread, I went to a birthday party with a Vegas theme last week and decided to go with a Fallout: New Vegas inspired costume. Having mentioned the idea to a few friends who loved it, I threw together a little teaser for them:

Yeah, that's about as artistic as I get.

It's not electrical tape, though it does look a bit like it in that photo. It's not a "real" fedora, just a $10 job from a costume shop. As such, it's just a cheap plastic band.
