Vertical Leap...

Wed Mar 22, 2006 11:55 pm

Man i suck... i am 5'2 and i am 13 years old...cant jump high...

Anyways of improving my jump??

There are tons of threads about this in the past, but I think the most practical way of improving your verticle is doing exercises involving your abs, calves and other parts of your legs.

You're only 13 man, WAIT, just wait..

Hmm, you're only 5"2 though, don't wait, just give up..

Thu Mar 23, 2006 12:28 am

Keep jumping makes you jump higher. Cloudy-proven.

Thu Mar 23, 2006 12:30 am

I'm 13, i can touch the rim :!:
axare just do some exercises for the legs, don't give up.Just be pattient don't give up, keep tryin.

Thu Mar 23, 2006 12:31 am

i heard that if you just keep jumping, you will get better at it. whatever you do, make sure you stretc alot as that will help.

that said, being only 5'2 i think you would be better of practicing tear drops and speed... :?

I have around 2 or 3 inch higher hops than our 6 foot 3 guy and he can dunk it, i'm only 5 foot 7 so it shits me. For school, I have to do a fitness training program so I've decided to do Plyometric training. I've been lazy and i only started like 2 weeks ago. I only have to do the training program for 6 weeks but im gonna continue just doing plyometrics for 1-2 maybe even 3 months longer. Hopefully that'll improve my hops.

The site i use for my plyometric stuff is http://www.exrx.net/Lists/PowerExercises.html

First of all, you're too young for you too begin some serious workouts. Plyometrics can fuck up your knees, if you aren't carefull and/or start too young. Wait until your body fills out to some extension and then you can start doing excercises to increase your vertical/strength/explosivness. But then again, I'm no expert, I'm just telling what I see and know about this topic.

For increasing your vertical, several things must be in place for best results:
-weight training. There's no jump without proper strength and legs are not the only body part that works when jumping. Abs, arms, shoulders and back are also involved. And there's a difference between training for strength and explosivness. The latter is more dangerous and you really need a perfect tehnique to prevent injuries.
-stretching. The more flexible your muscles are, the better is range of their movement. And the better is range, the higher you can jump.
-plyometrics. The link Jugs gave you is extremely usefull (not only for plyometrics, but also for other sorts of training.)
-low body fat. I think that's pretty self-explainable.

Thu Mar 23, 2006 3:48 am

hm. get a six pack, thats wat my coach said, cause the more fit you are, the easier it will be for you to jump.
when i was junior in high school i was able to dunk, but i got lazy and now lol.

my first dunk was during sophomore year in hs, i was 5'8. i think. though i havent grown in like 3 years. XD and putting on some weight doesnt exactly help too much

looking to get back into shape again so i can dunk on my roommate again.

Where is the j/k after that funny writing.

On TOPIC: Try to jump and touch the rim everyday, you'll stretch out in height, but will jump higher as well.

^ What VanK said. Plus, most of the jumping strength comes from the quads, and then from the calves. Work on the quads and calves, and it should help. Plyometrics is also very, very good, but never do them more than 3 times a week.

I think that is quite correct, i got some pain in my knees the other day so i stopped. I went for a jog a few days later and my knees were :x :x :x but that's probably because i sit on the computer all day. i do flexibility training as well, just usual stretches and such..

I have/do most of the things you mentioned, except weight training :o but I have pretty good strength in my legs though

um. i am just chinese. but not all chinese are like short with no leap. granted i had a running start from halfcourt and barely got the ball in the rim, but i suppose it counts. right?

Thu Mar 23, 2006 7:03 am

Damn, I am 5'7'' and can only touch about 2 inches of the backboard...whoa.

Thu Mar 23, 2006 8:34 am

I'm 5'8 and I can grab the rim with 1 step. Well, not grab with the whole hand, but like the fingers. With a little run I can grab it like that though. I've never really done any serious jump training, and I don't exactly have a 6-pack, if you know what I mean. So, I'm not sure how I can really jump reasonably high. It's kind of stupid really... These 2 guys on my team, are like 6'4, 6'5, and neither of them can dunk. Granted one of them has a messed up knee, but he doesn't jump off that leg. :P

Hopefully I'll be able to dunk by the start of next season. :D

Thu Mar 23, 2006 9:09 am

I'm 5'8, and on a good day I can grab the rim. I restarted air alert 3 weeks ago, but haven't done any serious jumping to see where I'm at. Anyway, I've grabbed the rim straight up off of 2 feet, no running or anything. If I'm really lose I can do it. But as I said, I haven't tried recently. Maybe I'll try tomorrow.
