Guillaume wrote:And Lighting Strike, the restore point system is the last resort for me because as mentioned by Andrew, it's never a perfect picture of what the system looked like at that exact moment, and not only it didn't work in this case, but because I had uninstalled and reinstalled a few programs (AVG, Firefox, Glary) after that restore point, now I can't even use them anymore. They're still showing in the "add/remove programs" window, but I cannot use or even uninstall them, I only get error messages now.
Oh, I understand now Guillaume, sorry that you've had to end up re-installing everything again.
Also, I take back what I said about System Restore being quick, it's taken 2 hours so far for my laptop to set itself back to
yesterday.

Guillaume wrote:I especially can't believe that supposedly protected restore points can still be affected even if the virus happened after it was created.
If the virus is still in the hard drive it will still remain and continue to infect even after a system restore. iirc system restore doesn't delete files that are stored even after a created restore point.

Yes, and virus's like to infect the restore directories, too.

My parents are breaking up, and both of their frustrations are being taken out on me for the time being, so I have to tread really lightly, basically not open my mouth at all. I'm copping it for the slightest things, and it's getting ridiculous.

Broken oven, broken fridge, throw out a fridge & freezer full of food, life's good!!! Looks like my vision of getting a big TV before the baby comes along are going out the window.

Sorry to hear that. Hang in there, find a happy distraction, try to get out of the house over the Summer.

Yeah, it certainly takes forever, and obviously, results are not guaranteed...

I wasn't aware of that, I really thought that existing restore points should be protected from pretty much anything that happens subsequently. Except for the HD being struck by lightning or some shit.

Going to my regular store after work for that too. Good thing they know me well, I'd have to pay quite a lot otherwise to have my data backed up and virus checked, my HD formatted, a temporary full copy of XP or Vista installed, and Windows 7 upgraded on top of that...

I need my daily dose of NLSC, man.

I'm going to have my final exams soon as well. Of course, if I won't be kicked out from my university till then. I have no idea how I'm going to pass them though..

My video card has been whacked up again, this time displaying dots pre-boot up. It first happened when my brother (yes the same guy who was using the PC the first time the video card was whacked) was playing
DOTA,

. I'm going to return the video card again.
Tue Dec 01, 2009 4:39 pm
Your brother must have had a gaming marathon. DOTA isn't that graphics intensive as to make your videocard whack.

My PC keeps restarting. And also right when I'm about to finish a game of My Player. It's just plain annoying, I need a new gaming rig.

Actually I used the unit first before he did. Didn't run any 3D app though. Just made backups for Windows 7 installation, and it ended up really formatting the unit. It seems that the card is really destroyed, as it is, I plugged the monitor port into the onboard serial VGA, and it worked -- and I concluded that the card is indeed whacked.

But the on-board VGA rendered 7's aero though.

See if they will sell you a new brother while your shopping for a new card. It's the second time something has happened to your videocard after he has used it. Maybe you need a cooler brother who won't fry your cards.

Thanks for the support Andy, I'll do just that.

I actually have set an BIOS administrator password before but removed it immediately because I thought my younger brother will be furious if the BIOS is locked.
Wed Dec 02, 2009 8:18 am
Those who mess up other people's computers with regularity waive the right to be furious if said computers are later password protected.

Ok. It's a myth how you ran Dragon Age Origins just fine and Dota burned your card. Tell your brother to stop overclocking video card to play DOTA. It just isn't necessary.
Thu Dec 03, 2009 8:01 pm
Maybe said brother thinks the lag in DOTA is a result of insuffucient hardware power, thus the secret OC, which Lean doesn't know.
Fri Dec 04, 2009 2:10 am
It's a hardware problem. The card I just returned is the same card that was jacked up a few months ago when its fan stopped working.
