Those are Pen Tool paths + Strokes with a small-diameter faded brush (it's on the Shape Dynamics under the Brush options).

i think GH33's work is an instant vector. there are spots where it still looks like a photo.

jenz, the second one is the one i did manually, then in the third one it's a bit combination of the 2nd and 1st, an also i used some illustrator tracing and photoshop filtering. i kinda cheated on the vectoring since not everything is done manually. i'll try to do better next time
