Shit I need to get on those torrents. Lots of shows to check out. Here's my take on what I've seen:

Wilfred (FX) - C ... It's okay, but the humor kinda falls flat for me.
Veep (HBO) - B ... Fuckety fuck shit fuck - this show's pretty good so far. Not sure how far the plot can really go but it's funny.
The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret (IFC - 2nd) - A ... This show was fucking hilarious. Will Arnett kinda sucked on it but it doesn't matter because David Cross just kills it. Couldn't recommend it more.
Bored to Death (HBO - 3rd) - D ... Second season was pretty good, but after the third season was so bad, it's no wonder it got cancelled. Ted Danson is fantastic but but I don't know how it got so bad last year.
Cougar Town (ABC - 3rd) - B+ ... Guilty pleasure except it's actually a pretty good show. I prefer Scrubs for nostalgic reasons, but I think this show tops it as far as lulz are concerned. Haven't seen all of this last season though.
Bob's Burgers! (FOX - 2nd) - incomplete ... Love Jon Benjamin and Eugene Mirman so I need to watch more of this.
Community (NBC - 3rd) - A ... This show's great. Likable characters and it's gotten pretty funny this season. ("Here's my phone. Don't let me call Chang. I'm locking myself in your room")
Louie (FX - 2nd) - A ... Can. not. wait. for. season. 3.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (FX - 7th) - B ... I'm impressed at how this show has managed to stay good.
Justified (FX - 3rd) - A ... Best show of the year. This show is fucking awesome and more people should watch it.
Portlandia (IFC - 2nd) - C ... Would be a D but LaMarcus Aldridge was on the show. Everybody loves this show up here, but if I hear another person say "put a bird on it"...
The Simpsons (FOX - 23rd) - F ... Now I've only seen one or two episodes this year but in my mind the Simpsons episodes after the turn of the century aren't canon.

I'm starting to think it actually was pre-cancelled. Rather than pair it up with Curb or anything they put it on during a dead season alone. It had solid ratings when it was paired with Curb, but alone with no new shows nearby, it imploded. The fact it wasn't as good probably didn't help the ratings recover. A couple of the episodes were alright though.

The one and a half "real life" people I know from the area say the same exact thing.
The Simpsons (FOX - 23rd) - F ... Now I've only seen one or two episodes this year but in my mind the Simpsons episodes after the turn of the century aren't canon.

That's not saying much, the writers apparently think none of the show is canon.

I gave it and Family Guy a bump because while both shows have characters who are nothing but ciphers, and the jokes aren't brilliantly clever, the plots noticeably improved the last two years compared to the say five prior. At least half the episodes were more of an effort than merely as the duct tape to hold the jokes together in some order.

IIRC, both shows have had some significant writer turnover recently, with Simpsons apparently going to have even more next season. So maybe they'll honestly earn a C next year.

Apparently it's even more amazing if you know actual D.C. people. Explains the hype. Based on what I knew of the few plus anyone who lives in Lansing. I can see why they love it more.

Selina's staff are probably too loyal.

i didn't expect that there would be another season of Ridiculousness. The videos are getting lamer, but heck, the guest stars are getting more famous. Two episodes in the second season and they had Bieber and Mayweather as guests unlike 1st season where they only had MTV stars.

I got Showtime free for 3 months from getting Direct TV, so I've been catching up with some shows that I had always heard about but never got a chance to actually watch:

I know there's a thread for that one, but Dexter is pretty fucking good. I have yet to watch all the previous seasons, but I watched the entire last season and I even got my wife hooked to it. It's not quite as edgy as I was expecting, but it's certainly entertaining stuff.

I watched the entire season of Homeland, and it's pretty gripping stuff. Some great actor performances too.

Episodes is awesome. From living in Hollywood before, the whole vibe to that they have going on around this place really resonates with me, and the show is just fucking hilarious most of the time.

Besides Showtime, I've also gathered every season of Breaking Bad on my DVR and started to watch the first few episodes. Badass show too, definitely has a grittier, more realistic aspect to it than most shows that deal with similar subject matters.

Suits and Burn Notice are KILLING IT this season. White Collar doin some solid work too.

The whistle to cue the credits on Covert Affairs makes it worth it when they do it.

i was curious how white collar was going to bring it back after what happened at the end of last season but they did a pretty good job of bringing everything back to normal

This show is so awesome it probably deserves it's own thread;

The Newsroom.

Oh God.

FX has picked up 90 additional episodes of Sheen’s new sitcom, Anger Management, TVLine has learned. The order far surpasses the one-season/10-to 15-episode renewal that has become the cable standard.

As previously reported, with the renewal comes the addition of Martin Sheen as a series regular, playing dad to his real-life son.

Darko, did Terriers need more than one season.

Speaking of Donal Logue, so did The Knights of Prosperity.

Speaking of ABC, so did Better Off Ted.

The Newsroom.

I absolutely love that show. More than I've loved a show in a really long time. It's right up there for me along with House and Game of Thrones.

First Jackal, now Leftos. Will I ever have a night where I don't cry?

Huh?

Forgot to mention Suits, which I love as well. I was taken by surprise by the series ending at 11 episodes this year, I was raging when I heard the "new episodes this January".

Re: Generic TV Thread

Mon Sep 03, 2012 3:41 am

The Newsroom is terrible. Sorkin is a terrorist.

Suits is a USA show, most of them do split seasons. You get 10-12 episodes and then they take a multi-month break where you get 6-8 more. It kills ratings, but they don't seem to care.

Re: Generic TV Thread

Mon Sep 03, 2012 3:42 am

Fuck you.

But yeah, can't wait to see more of Suits. I hate split seasons, but what can you do.

Re: Generic TV Thread

Mon Sep 03, 2012 3:47 am

Anything Sorkin wanted to do that was a good idea he did with Sports Night and it's all anyone ever needs to see from him. Especially since real life forced his hand into giving a shit.

His endless pursuit of perfected masturbation on everything else is a human rights violation.

Re: Generic TV Thread

Newsroom is laughably bad. The pilot was the cheesiest piece of shit I've seen in a long time. Is it still better than hell on wheels? Maybe...

Sad to see breaking bad go for the year. True blood surprisingly returned to form (despite being retarded) and will also be missed. Weeds ends four seasons too late in a couple weeks as well. Louie ends in a couple weeks too which is too bad.

Soon, Boredwalk Empire and the walking dead return. I need some new shows

Re: Generic TV Thread

If you haven't, watch Terriers. If you have, watch it again.

Other than that, any kind of thing you want? Or something that's "similar" to something else? Drama? Comedy? You watched The League (speaking of soon to return FX stuff)?

EDIT: Reading above, did you ever watch more Bob's Burgers?

I'm in love with Boss, but it's definitely not a show for everybody.

Suits was amazing this season.

Necessary Roughness also continued to grow on me and is really good. It is still a USA show, so...

Episodes was pretty solid. (And somehow left out of my massive list above.)

And since we started this post with a series shot down in its youth, The Finder.

Re: Generic TV Thread

Wed Sep 05, 2012 3:54 am

I'll probably give Terriers another shot. The pilot was okay, but I never watched beyond that. The first couple episodes of Bob's Burgers were kind of funny but the plot-lines got pretty stupid and the jokes were hit-and-miss. I watched several episodes that got progressively worse.

The League I've been meaning to try, same with Boss, though I'm not a big fan of USA network.

Re: Generic TV Thread

Wed Sep 05, 2012 5:10 am

Oh man have you missed out if you bailed out with the pilot. Second episode isn't necessarily amazing, but like The Wire and Justified, episodes three and four bring in and set all the ongoing plot threads off into awesome motion. Considering you agree on the amazing that is Justified, I'd be shocked if this disappoints you. (Aspects of the pilot and title and theme song and advertising were all entirely deceptive of what the show actually is. You can see it there in the pilot when you go back, but going in blind I can see why it bombed.)

If you marathon it, you'll hate the recaps.

I don't know how far you went into Bob's Burgers, but the common consensus I see out there that I agree with is it had a couple good episodes early, was in a bit of a rut and then around Art Crawl took off.

Boss is from Starz. USA would never allow that many boobs.

The League might be FX's best sitcom right now. (Not counting Louie since it's less and less trying to even be close to that from my point of view.)

Worth noting though that I think The League is a bit like The Office/Parks/Always Sunny in that the SHORT first season is testing a lot of stuff and not sure exactly what it wants to be. Though has a great episode or two. Season two forward takes off.

Random new show comments:

Go On (NBC) - I think I just like watching Matthew Perry suffer, and I'm pretending this is the same character as in Mr. Sunshine. And that both characters are actually Matthew Perry post-Friends. There's a meme going around comparing this to Community and there are aspects of similarity to the first six episodes or so before Community went off the rails but if you're a Community fan you probably won't find what you're looking for. benji's episode order: Picked up for the season.

Vegas (CBS) - The pilot wasn't THAT great because Michael Chiklis was totally wasted, but if it has somewhere to go it could be pretty good. benji's episode order: four to six.

The Mindy Project (FOX) - I was curious. benji's episode order: one or two just to make sure. I did after all watch three episodes of Whitney.

Last Resort (ABC) - This is fantastic. benji's episode order: Picked up for the season.

Elementary (CBS) - This is pretty good as well, I'm not fretting over it like fans of Sherlock (which I have to admit I haven't watched but want to) because it's really more like a darker version of Monk than anything. (Which to be fair was itself a twisted version of Sherlock Holmes.) benji's episode order: Picked up for the season.

Nothing else has jumped out at me so far.

Started watching How I Met Your Mother, from the very beggining, and I have to say that it's very nice. One of the few series that I actually like all the main characters and which most of the times has jokes that are indeed funny ,and not force you to laugh with those laugh tracks in the background. I've finished season 2,and I'm probably going to watch this till the end. (Y)
