i like the background a lot, just a quick sig, lol it only took me like 15 minutes, saved the text to a psd so i can only make changes to the text because i have a strong feeling that you people wont like the text

3 things you need to do immediately

1) start simple - don't flood an image with content or go for anything fancy right out of the gate. I know right now you're going through an experimentation phase, but if you do not get the basics right then you're going to get frustrated because you'll continue to make art that doesn't gel.

2) learn basic design principles - there are probably a lot of quality artists here that don't specifically know basic principles of design, but have taught themselves through observation and experimentation what feels right and how to present graphics to suit certain themes and moods. Actually learning basic principles of design will save you a lot of time. If I was to make 1 observation as to what was the most unsatifactory component of your work it would be the lack of balance in terms of placement of graphical content and color.

Do google searches for things like "basic principles of design", here's a little tutorial I found, it relates directly to web design but it's still relevant.

3) learn the core components of photoshop - a lot of people make the mistake in their photoshop infancy of using as a tool to create "cool" effects. Trust me you're not the first person to churn out travesties like this:



What makes photoshop the most powerful 2D art program around is not the filters, adjustments, styles, or custom brush sets. It's the layer organisation and the masking. Run photoshop and through the help index look up things like masking, pen tool, shapes, vector masking, alpha masking, channels, clipping masks, layer groups, adjustment layers, and blending.

For the border, all you have to do is select your background, then Edit>Stroke...
Be sure that the Stroke is inside, not outside.
I agree, you're getting better and as I said in my thread, for the Nuggets avatar, just don't stretch the logo so much
