NLSC Forum Back Online

Postby Andrew on Sat Nov 15, 2008 3:09 am

It took quite a bit longer than I was hoping, but the upgrade to phpBB3 is finally complete. Once more, I apologise for the inconvenience and thank everyone for their understanding and support. The Forum should now be running properly, if you do run into any issues please let me know. Please note that you may have to re-upload your avatar and if you have been using a custom title, you will definitely need to enter it again. Check out some of the new profile options while you're there.

Honestly saying, as the first impression, i liked the older version more, i guess it just takes time to get used as it´s quite different now. Tho it isn´t hard to notice you´ve put a lot of effort into this (Y)

EDIT: As I´ve explored it more now, the profile area has improved a lot

It is quite different and aesthetically speaking we still have a bit of tweaking to do. Basically, I didn't want to keep the Forum offline any longer, the database transfer and search index rebuild took much longer than I'd hoped. We'll be ironing out those things ASAP.

Feature-wise, it's much more advanced than phpBB2 for the registered user and from an administrative standpoint, a lot of the things we added to phpBB2 (or tried to add) are standard features in phpBB3. We're not yet taking advantage of all the new features but we'll keep making those tweaks in the near future, as I said with the Forum being down about 20 hours while I got the essentials sorted out I was keen to get it back online as soon as it was stable. Hopefully everyone will be able to get used to the aesthetic changes and we can tweak it a bit to make it more visually pleasing, but the update is certainly more than a new layout. :)

Looks great, Andrew. I'm really liking the new "friends and foes" feature, I know for a fact it'll come in handy sooner or later. Great job as always. (Y)

Ah, the whole who is posting thing is on the right hand side now, that's the biggest thing that will take getting used to for me.

Good luck with all the other changes/implementations. But enough of that...

Where are Shadowgrin and Drex in their tigerprint thongs? Did we lose the porn section too during the move? It's offline now. :(

I really like the user CP, very neat and ordered.
I guess there's no custom title anymore, but no biggie.

The only bad things are, that you can't post pictures wider than 600 pixels, which HAS to be fixed, and [align=center] or just [center] either.

The world just wasn't ready for that. Plus, we need to leave something for later gifts to the Community.

I set that limit to prevent people from posting huge images that stretch the page but I guess it is a small limit. I can remove or revise that setting. I'll need to fix up the centring code, unfortunately we couldn't port that mod across from phpBB2 but we should be able to add it through the custom BBCode option. :)

Not a fan of the new layout I find it cluttered and the blue to green gradient theme not a great mix I think. Will there be any skin theme options to choose from ?

My only complain is the fugly color in the quotes, change it back to white or so.
Oh and we need a new header.

The gradient issue wasn't intended, it's a mistake I've got to fix up in the templates. As I said, we will be tweaking the aesthetics but this update is far from just a skin upgrade; there are a lot of new features which is the main reason for the update. I don't know about multiple skins at this time, I know it's something we've often talked about in the past but I'd like to get the current one fixed up first and see how people like that.

Definitely something we'll change. I did rush the design a bit but by that point the forum had been down for going on 20 hours and I'd been up from about 8 yesterday morning until 4 this morning getting the conversion finished (converting all the posts and rebuilding the search index took ages) so I just wanted to get it back online and then finish tweaking the design afterwards.

It is, but hopefully everyone gets used to it in time and we'll clean up a few aspects of the design that I didn't get to in the early hours of the morning.

I'm also getting used to the new aesthetically improved outlook of the forum, but I've gotta say you've done a good job, Andrew! Very soothing and pleasing to the eyes... looks classy and better than before. :applaud:

It's the default phpbb3 theme with a slight CSS edit. (Full default theme can be seen here.)

Please, change the image size to atleast 800, or even remove it. It completely messed up my dynasty thread.

Can we move the post subject to the right so when I am trying to read the thread I don't have to look at "Re: NLSC Forum Back Online" above every post? Maybe centering it would make threads easier to read, or even getting rid of it for every post especially if it's just a "Re."

I like the change, but Trebuchet does not read well as compared to Verdana. I'm sure there a way to move the avatars/post info to the left, because it's not easier to spot posters if they're displayed on the right (we read from left to right...)
