Manute Bol - Age in question - Played at 50?

Postby Dee4Three on Wed Nov 22, 2017 11:56 am

Interesting, and of course Thon Maker came to mind.

Jayson Williams thinks he was much older as well. Imagine if it was discovered that he was indeed 50 in his last year in the league. Also, he supposedly died at 48, Google images of him in 2009, looks older than 47/48 to me.

I really wouldn't be surprised.

He wasn't born on October 16th? Damn it, now I'm stuck sharing the day with Tom Tolbert. :(

I wouldn't be surprised if he was at least a few years older than his fabricated date of birth made him out to be. I don't know about him being 55 years old in 1990, which would've made him 50 when he made his debut (and we thought Pablo Prigioni was an old rookie!). I guess we don't know for sure and thus can't rule it out, but my guess would be that he was more likely around 30 when he came into the league, after he was presented as being in his early 20s to get him into college.

Maybe in 1990 he was 35 like he told Jayson Williams (who obviously thought he was much older). That's would make a little more sense, that would have meant he retired at 40 or 41, and died at like 56.

That sounds a little more realistic.

Mutombo now trying to make sure he outlives those that recruited him.

Before Washington played the Boston Celtics in the first exhibition game of Bol's rookie season, Larry Bird started a pool to see which of his teammates would be the first to dunk on Bol. Every Celtic anted up $50. At the end of the season no one had won the pot, and the players gave the money to Boston's equipment manager.

Yeah, I could see that being very plausible.

Yi Jianlian's age also was in question. People say he was perhaps older while I thought he looked like a high school kid.

Ironically, Yi's handlers themselves acted like high school kids.

Yi Jianlian's wiki says he was born in 1984, but Google and other sources say 1987.

There's no way anyone, even someone 7'7" could play NBA basketball into their fifties. Especially with training staffs not being as good in the day. He was probably older than he claimed to be, same with Ibaka, Thon and... Shabazz Muhammad

You obviously don't know Asian people lol
With them, it's not about how you look. Babyfaces for life.

Plus add to the fact that the Chinese government always fudged with athletes' ages in the Olympics to be more advantageous to them I believed the rumors that he was older

Heres a really cool article from 2001 about Bol. It states in here that Bol believes he is anywhere from 41 to 44 years old in 2001. So again, we just don't know.

Fascinating stuff in here about him trash talking, and an injury on a dunk attempt.

I remember reading about him breaking his teeth on a dunk attempt. I think my favourite Manute trash talking story is when he screamed "Fuck you, you motherfuck! (sic)" at Phil Jackson.

Apparently Bol is the originator of the phrase "my bad" I recently learned.

Saying this like Mutombo wasn't playing at 50 too.

Of course, the Nets tried to sign Wilt at age 49...because well, they're the Nets.
