Elton Brand would've made six, had he not changed his mind and opted for retirement.

Pierce is retiring at the end of the season, and reportedly will sign a one day deal with Boston so that he can retire a Celtic. I expect that Dirk and Vince will end up being the last two players from the 90s in the league.

Anyone remember who the last player from the 80s was? I have a feeling it was Cliff Robinson.

I tried to look it up, couldn't find anything. But that would make sense, he retired after his short stint with Vince and the Nets.

Did Artest make the Lakers final roster spot then?

I actually embrace being an nba fan in my mid 30's, we have seen so many talented players in our time but I still don't think I've seen a player as good as Michael Jordan.

Funny how that Cliff Robinson began his career with the Nets, while the younger Cliff Robinson ended his career there.

Wouldn't have known off the top of my head. I knew of the older Cliff Robinson, but looked him up again on Basketball Reference and noticed that he began his career with the Nets.

Agreed. Dirk's still got it.

It's where it begins, when the players you grew up watching start calling it a day. I've been through a couple of cycles of it at this point.

When I started feeling old it was when I'd see players from the 90's sons coming to league.

Yeah, that's definitely a milestone. First it was some of the players who came along in the 80s retiring, and rookies who were born in the 80s coming in. Now it's players who came along in the 90s or early 2000s retiring, the sons of players from the 80s/90s coming into the league, and players born in the 90s. In a few years, we'll have players born in the 21st Century entering the league. Come to think of it, once the five players pictured in the first post are gone, there'll be no one who played in the last century/millennium left in the league.

If (when?) Andre Miller signs somewhere, he'll make six.

Nazr Mohammed is still out there too. Plus Ray Allen is still flirting with a title run comeback. So you almost could field a roster of 1990s players had Brand not retired.

He retired the same year as Kevin Willis so they tied. I would have guessed Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo but then he was drafted in 1991.

Robert Parish was the last player from the 1970's. Rick Mahorn missed by one year.

I'd forgotten about them. Seems like they might be done, though. My guess is that Ray Allen won't come back, though there'll be discussions and rumours as he mulls it over, like Reggie Miller with the Celtics back in 2007.

I miss the 90s. All that fast run and gun and 3PT shooting madness is not what I like. Some days ago I read an article about the decline of centers and that big men won't be needed that much anymore. Some teams rely on quick players, smaller players, shooting...and big men are only needed 10 minutes a game for tipoffs and such.

I miss the days of Olajuwon, Ewing, David Robinson...hook shots, footwork, hard work in the paint.

There are things I like about today's game, but I do get a bit weary of the impromptu three-point contests at times, and miss the strong post play of previous eras. We might see it come back though, with players like Karl-Anthony Towns, Joel Embiid, and of course DeMarcus Cousins.

All 3 players mentioned love shooting the long 2's and even 3's at times, the fast pace and over use of everyone shooting 3's has really killed the good old post game.

True, they are definitely hybrids in that sense. The great bigs of the 90s (Shaq aside) did have a mid-range game, though.

Olajuwon, Robinson, Ewing all had great mid range talent. So did Mourning, Daugherty, Rik Smits, Divac, Parish, etc.

Longley hit mid range routinely for the bulls. I'm obviously not including many others, and that's not even mentioning the many PF'S who stepped out and had great mid range games.

The great thing about most of these guys is they also had great back to the basket games and good low post repetoire.

the current NBA has lots of problems but all the 3 point shooting is not one of them imo.
