Heat don't clear Chris Bosh to return after failed physical

Chris Bosh has failed his preseason physical, meaning the Miami Heat will not clear him for training camp next week and casting serious doubt on his playing future.

The Heat announced in a statement Friday that there is no timetable for Bosh's return.

"The Miami Heat and Chris Bosh, in consultation with team doctors and other physicians, have been working together for many months with the mutual goal of having Chris return to the court as soon as possible," the team's statement said. "Chris has now taken his pre-season physical. The Miami Heat regret that it remains unable to clear Chris to return to basketball activities."

Definitely doesn't sound good at this point. Perhaps not altogether surprising given his problems with clots the past couple of seasons running, but nevertheless unfortunate.

And looks like his career with the Heat is over.

Miami Heat president Pat Riley said Monday he believes forward Chris Bosh's career with the franchise is over.

"We are not [working toward Bosh's return]," Riley said, per Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "I think Chris is still open-minded. But we are not working toward his return. We feel that, based on the last exam, that his Heat career is probably over."

That's sad to see he couldn't make it back but the Heat are not willing to take any chances and neither should Bosh.

Good luck to him in whatever he does next with his life.

As tough a pill as it may be to swallow, it does sound like calling it a day might be the best decision he could make for his well-being. Even if he could negotiate a buyout with the Heat, it seems unlikely anyone else would want to take the risk.

So sudden...

Seems this is the new era for the Heat with all trio likely gone. Whiteside & Dragic look to be the future for now. Damn... times change so fast.

Heat might ensure Bosh can't play for anyone in the 2017 postseason

The end of Chris Bosh’s career with the Miami Heat has not gone as anyone could have planned when he signed a new contract extension two summers ago. A sad story that began with blood clot issues that put the All-Star forward’s career (and potentially life) in danger has morphed into a more familiar bad breakup between team and player. Bosh has wanted to return to action this season, but the Heat and their doctors have not cleared him medically following several rounds of tests. He has admitted that his time with the team is over and that he will have to go elsewhere to continue his NBA career.

Unfortunately, NBA salary cap rules mean that giving Bosh that opportunity isn’t as simple as releasing him and letting him choose his next employer. If Bosh plays 25 games for another team in any season, his max salary will count against the Heat’s cap figure for the duration of the contract (which he gets anyway). That means the Miami front office will do whatever it can to keep Bosh out of action until the end of this season to free up room to lure free agents this summer.

As reported by ESPN’s Zach Lowe, that means Bosh is very likely to be released after March 1, when he will be ineligible to play in the 2017 NBA Playoffs

So yeah, that's all getting a bit messy and full of ill-feeling. The thing is, given the fact the split isn't going very amicably, and the whole situation with Wade leaving because he didn't feel like his sacrifices and loyalty had been appreciated, are big name free agents going to think twice about trusting Riley and considering the Heat an attractive option? No doubt they'll be able to throw a lot of money at someone to get them to sign, but will it be the cream of the crop? They might have shot themselves in the foot, here.

Bosh's LIFE is potentially in danger here, nevermind his nba career.

He may want to play but it's a big assumption a team doctor will clear him to play

I hope Bosh just moves on and retires

I just don't get it why people are still expecting Bosh to play, with some blaming Pat Riley.

I think it comes down to the way it's being handled and the way the relationship has soured, even if the move makes sense for the Heat, and if it's in Bosh's best interests as well.

Agreed. Maybe I have my facts mixed? It's the 2nd year in a row he was shut down and recently he failed his physical. And Bosh will still get paid even if he doesn't play?

If that's the case it would be nice if his independent doctors came out and put their necks on the line here by saying they hold themselves liable for anything that would happen to Bosh should he play again

Just from an ethics standpoint a team should not clear him

He vows to step on the court again. But Riley says Not for the Heat.

This season is a goner for Bosh for sure, He wont be eligible for the playoffs when he's waived.

Daniel Bryan? Lol

It sucks when a big star goes down with injury and then teams try to get buyer's remorse and hope/ask them to retire to save money

players go to cities based on ability to win and the city the team is located in. if it was based on how well players are treated the mavs would be killing it every year in free agency

True, the Heat will always have location on their side. Selling a top free agent on them being a powerhouse might be a more difficult task. Thinking back to some of the Bulls' problems recruiting top free agents and seemingly narrowly missing out on them, I have to think that reputation of the front office is at least a factor.

First Wade doesn't get signed and now they won't clear Bosh. This is a classy franchise. Buy him out and stop holding him prisoner.

Whiteside just re-upped for a big time contract. Miami does not have a state income tax either.

i agree that the front office can sway a decision but i feel the city itself plays the biggest role over all. if it was history then the celtics would have a steady stream of top rate free agents but boston is cold and the city is old as hell. go to LA and you are rubbing elbows with celebrities on a nightly basis. lots of factors go into it with the top going to ability to win and the city itself. being able to make more money from endorsements is a major factor also

The Miami HEAT announced today that they have waived forward Chris Bosh.

http://www.nba.com/heat/news/heat-waive-chris-bosh

The number “1” will never be worn by another player and we can't wait to someday hang his jersey in the rafters.

Well deserved.

I hope he's given up on the hopes of playing somewhere, if it's really as dangerous as its been reported to be, I'd rather he not die. Wouldn't mind him featuring on TNT and NBAtv more often, he's pretty well spoken.

Not sure if the Raptors are the one that should retire his jersey as he simply played better then. But cultural impact Bosh made as a Heat definitely was bigger I assume.

Yeah, I wish him well and miss him dearly as he was such a big part of one of my all time favorite teams, but wouldn't want to see him trying to make a comeback at risk of health issues. Besides, he's old and have been gone too long. Should take a lot of work and miracle to offer anything valuable as a basketball player in this league. Perhaps try China or big 3 on 3.

Would be cool to see him in big3. He'd be a pretty dominant player. Cat mobley is still playing after heart issues, albeit not the same issues

Completely different issues. Mobley suffers from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (which incidentally is what led to Reggie Lewis' untimely death), whereas Bosh is suffering from constant blood clotting, with the medication used to treat Bosh's condition making it unsafe for him to play in the NBA.

At least Bosh had extremely nice career. Michael Dickerson would have been a Drexler, Bryant Reeves was on path to become Olajuwon-Shaq hybrid.
