Kobe is to have his hand and foot imprinted in a ceremony at the world-renowned Grauman's Chinese Theater... The first thing I thought was 'ok...' And I am still thinking it's stupid because he has not done anything in that field.

There probably is no strict criteria on who gets selected, since it is not an actual award for accomplishments in the movie industry. it is more probably about who is the toast of the town. Shouldn't be much controversy there. What probably is stranger was when Sly Stallone was inducted to the boxing HOF.

Glancing at the list of people honoured, he's the first athlete and I believe the first non-entertainer period so it is a little out of the norm, but I'd agree that "toast of the town" is the rationale here.

Jackson says in interview this is his last season

Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson has reiterated this will be his last season working the sideline.

Coming into this season with a chance for an unprecedented fourth “three-peat” and his second with the Lakers, Jackson at the time called the 2010-11 campaign his “last stand.”

In an interview Thursday with ESPN-Los Angeles, Jackson said, “Most everybody believes I’m not going to fulfill this ‘last stand’ promise and I will come back and coach again but it really is (my last season). I really want to do this for myself.”

However, the 11-time NBA champion acknowledged in September that he’s still uncertain whether he’ll retire after this season, as he repeatedly vowed last summer when he agreed to return with a pay cut.

He seems pretty adamant that he's calling it a day after this season, but it remains to be seen if the way the season ultimately ends for the Lakers would change his mind. On one hand, I could see him electing to ride off into the sunset as it were should the Lakers threepeat, yet at the same time the rare opportunity to go for four in a row could draw him back. Likewise, should the Lakers fall short of the championship I could see him wanting to go ahead and call it quits, yet at the same time it might encourage him to go for one more season to try and end things on a better note. It's difficult to predict as each scenario seems just as likely.

I think he is 90% likely to retire, regardless of this year's result, at the end of the season. And Brian Shaw steps into his shoes. (Y)

Yep, when Cavs were interviewing Shaq/Scott, I was thinking whoever didn't get the job would be the Lakers coach. :)

Brian Shaw as a replacement would be my pick too. <3

Although PJ has had several health problems, I am also hoping that he is psyching the Lakers to get their act together. Maybe it is just also his way of motivating his team. Mostly trying to get everyone's focus of getting another championship this year. PJ is really tough to replace.

shaw seemed like a great teammate and great influence for young players. But has never been a head coach. I don't know if this will work out, but seems like an ok pick, since he already knows the current coaching system both as assistant and player.

Byron Scott has had good success as head coach, but seems to get dealt with crummy cards everywhere he goes. Too bad the nets scooped up avery johnson as well, I would have loved to see him try to coach the Lakers in case PJ does retire. And there is always the longshot of convincing Mike K to leave Duke for the NBA. Well a fan could only hope. Haha

Shaw does a lot of the coaching now already, at least it seems that way during the games, when Phil is rolling his eyes trying to get them to snap out of it, you'll see Shaw discussing what seems like where to be on the floor etc.

He was Phil Jacksons choice as a replacement too. Kurt Rambis was my choice before he went to the T'Wolves.

Agreed. Shannon should never dunk again. After the debacle that was Shannon Brown, I cannot support another Lakers' atrocity ruining an All-Star Weekend event.

You've got to admit that everyone thought he would be a lot better than he was (I myself hate him for fucking it up!)... sorta like Andy Murray :P

Anyways, back on topic, the Lakers. What can I say? I didn't get to see the game but was Kobe ball hogging or genuinely doing what was best for the team and leading everyone to stand and watch?

Not really. I don't think anybody (myself included) actually thinks Murray is that good of a player. Only reason I wanted him to win is because he's a Scot :P

You would be surprised. A lot of people that I know felt like, he had a shot. I thought he'd put up a bit more of a fight but he was absolutely schooled. Given the fact that he's beaten Djoker before - one would think he'd win at least a few more games and not get spanked like he did. Like Shannon who pulls out these insane in-game dunks and then looks pretty ordinary in the slam dunk contest. (N)

It's like what Kenny Smith says every year, players need to warm up good before the game. Obviously most players come out of the dugout dry and cold. Also the other part of it is, a lot of the points and awe factor in the dunk contest comes from creativity. In game it's about reacting to the action, in the dunk contest it's about ability, style and creativity.

But with regards to the dunk contest, no participant has shamed himself worse than Chris Andersen.

Kobe lost them the game. He did manage to score 11 points in the fourth, but there were like 6-7 plays where no one but Bryant touched the ball. Boston realized he wasn't looking to move the basketball & they focussed on him defensively. Bryant kept forcing and LA lost. When the Lakers play through their big men, they win. Bryant needs to get that already.

Mitch Kupchak is pondering whether to make a trade. I wonder which team is going to "donate" players to the Lakers this year. haha

Meh. Didn't see the game in question, so I can't really argue either way, but looking at the numbers Neil seems to have a point. Kobe shot better than his season average from the floor with half his average turnover percentage and an above-average offensive rating, so you'd have to question how much it really hurt the team.
