Who's the bigger bust, Michael Olowokandi or Kwame Brown?

Wed Oct 15, 2008 10:31 pm

Kwame Brown.

Thu Oct 16, 2008 2:51 am

Kwame

Thu Oct 16, 2008 3:45 am

Michael Olowokandi. He's so bad, when you bring up his page on nba.com it sais "Given player cannot be found."

http://www.nba.com/playerfile/michael_olowokandi/

Most people choose Sam Bowie as the all time worst draft bust, most likely due to the players selected behind him, like Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley.

I think I've read he would've been a decent player if it wasn't for his injuries. At that time, it was hard to predict Jordan would be the most dominating player of all time and Barkley outperforming expectations at power forward despite being two inches shorter.

Same sentiments here. People are such douche when it comes to Sam Bowie, hindsight's a bitch.

At this point I'd say Kwame but if he can stick around a few more seasons and be at all productive, perhaps he might end up edging Olowokandi.

How do Hall of Fame entries work? This year, it was Olajuwon and Ewing, is that based on the 93-94 season?

Sat Oct 18, 2008 5:20 pm

The players have to have been retired for a certain number of years before they're eligible. Entries are based on a players' career, not just one season.

Sun Oct 19, 2008 11:24 am

Players must be retired for five years before they are eligible for nomination. Once nominated, they must receive at least 18 out of 24 votes to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

I couldn't find much about Aussie NBA players. Off the top of your heads, which Aussie players made it to the NBA and what happened to them in their 'careers'? And were there any players who could have declared for the NBA Draft but never did?

And I already know about Luc Longley.

What was the story with Gaze? Would he have made the league after leading Seton Hall in NCAA Final Four (Was it?)?

You really surprise me as Australian that you missed Andrew Bogut...

Well, Bogut is the most obvious one, being that his career is still going.

Shane Heal had brief stints with the T-Wolves and Spurs, before he went back to the NBL.

I believe Chris Anstey was a first round pick to the Mavericks, played there for a couple of seasons before being traded to the Bulls.

Mark Bradtke spent a season with the 76ers, but he only averaged about 1.6 points a game and 1.9 rebounds.

I'm pretty sure Andrew Gaze got a ring... because he was playing for the spurs that year (although, he didn't get much court time).

Feel free to correct me on any of this Andrew

Bogut is a no-brainer. I already know quite a lot about him. :P

Paul Rogers was selected in the Draft in the second round in 97 I think. Yes, Gaze did win a ring with the 99 Spurs but didn't make the playoff roster. Heal had short stints in mid 90s and 2002 or 2003.

Can anyone think of anyone else?

And yeah, my question about Gaze; if he wasn't in the NBL, what would he have been in the NBA?

Fri Oct 24, 2008 9:00 am

Brad Newley was drafted last year by Houston with 54th pick, tho haven´t played yet in the Nba and most likely won´t

I think he could have at least had a career similar to Detlef Schrempf. I doubt he would have enjoyed anywhere near the dominance he had in the NBL but I think given the opportunity he could have been the second or third player in a team's pecking order (depending on the team), maybe a couple of All-Star appearances in years where his team was dominant and on the whole have a fairly respectable career.

Fri Oct 24, 2008 12:24 pm

The other one that come to my mind apart of Longley is Anstey...

One question... Kirk Penney is Aussie or NZL?

Yeah, I think he's in Greece at the moment.

Did you catch any footage of him playing at Seton Hall?

Penney is Kiwi.

Fri Oct 24, 2008 5:54 pm

No, I've never seen any footage of him at Seton Hall but given he was a foreign born player without tremendous athleticism (but certainly legitimate basketball talent to say the least) I'm not sure he would have found instant success in the NBA though I guess it would depend on where he was drafted. I'm not sure he'd be a top ten pick, on talent you'd definitely take him ahead of Longley but I think Longley still stands out as more likely lottery pick (as he indeed was) because big men are looked upon so favourably in the Draft.

Does anyone remember Korleone Young? Is he still playing somewhere?

I reckon he'd still be young enough to be playing.

Sun Oct 26, 2008 10:21 am

Korleone Young! i heard it before...

Wasn't him one of the first high schooles to jump in the NBA with no success?
